Chapter 20: Mystery

The corridor’s dim lighting enhanced the mystery of the night. Yu Haozhou was startled by the sudden voice. He recognized who it was and waved at him: “I was about to find you. Come here.”

Han Jin’s hand was still resting on Yu Haozhou’s shoulder. Under Zhou Zizheng’s almost burning gaze, he abruptly withdrew his hand, rubbing his chilling neck. He muttered internally: This guy’s possessiveness is insane. Brothers can’t even put an arm around each other.

Yu Haozhou didn’t notice. He pulled Zhou Zizheng’s hand and asked, “Have you had any contact with Cheng Qianyu recently?”

Zhou Zizheng frowned and said truthfully, “Once, when I invited her to the wedding.”

The two people in the know exchanged a look.

Yu Haozhou cautiously began: “And? Nothing else? Did you guys talk about anything? Did Cheng Qianyu tell you anything?”

“Why are you so concerned about her?” Zhou Zizheng didn’t like this action that didn’t fit into their mutual understanding and simply let his possessiveness flare up: “You threw me in the private room for half an hour. Why didn’t I see you care about me?”

Han Jin: “…”

Yu Haozhou angrily cursed: “Are you sick? Of course I’m asking about her for a reason. Aren’t you her childhood friend?”

Zhou Zizheng glanced sideways at Han Jin, his meaning clear: “He should know better than me.”

Han Jin couldn’t stand it, but he didn’t want to tell Zhou Zizheng about Cheng Qianyu’s pregnancy. For some reason, he felt Chengcheng wouldn’t want Zhou Zizheng to know.

Seeing that Yu Haozhou also couldn’t come up with any solution, he stopped asking. Let it be. No matter what, he wouldn’t abandon Cheng Qianyu.

He patted his good brother’s shoulder, his expression undeniably forlorn: “Forget it, Haozi. I feel much better after telling you. I’m going back first. Help me say goodbye to the other guys.”

“Hey—” Without giving Yu Haozhou a chance to speak, Han Jin immediately walked away.

Seeing his desolate back, Yu Haozhou felt particularly guilty towards his brother. If it weren’t for his marriage, how could this situation have happened? He couldn’t even help his brother when he was most troubled.

“Zhou Zizheng, I find you truly, especially boring. Damn it, I was dealing with something serious. Why are you getting jealous for no reason?”

Having been scolded, Zhou Zizheng wasn’t angry. He reached out and wrapped his arm around him, grinning cheekily: “What is it? I’ll solve it for you.”

“Tch, you really can’t help with this one.”

Cheng Qianyu didn’t tell the person she was most familiar with—Zhou Zizheng—first, clearly because she didn’t know how to face him. Yu Haozhou knew in his heart that a crush of over ten years wasn’t easily let go.

Thinking about this, Yu Haozhou looked again at his near-perfect face. Damn it, why is he so handsome?

Zhou Zizheng only felt that Yu Haozhou’s gaze suddenly carried a hint of anger. He frowned: “Why are you staring?”

Yu Haozhou rolled his eyes and pushed away his approaching face: “Stop acting like an overgrown child all the time, always following me around. Zhou Zizheng, you are very immature.”

Yu Haozhou walked away quickly, fearful that he would hear his accelerating heart.

Zhou Zizheng was still savoring the faint citrus scent wafting from Yu Haozhou, clearly a bit enchanted. Hearing footsteps, he quickly chased after him with a smile: “Zhouzhou, we’re legally married! Who else would I follow if not you!”

Hidden around the dark corner, Xu Yi watched the entire scene unfold. He tossed his phone rhythmically, watching the people in front of him with amusement and curling his lips: “Their relationship is truly enviable.”

He suddenly snatched the phone from the air, his tone changing: “If you hadn’t interfered, Wu Yichen and I would have been like this too!”

The person in the shadow showed no remorse. The smoke drifting out blurred both their faces: “I truly don’t understand. Is it more satisfying with a man? Why do all of you like men?”

Xu Yi asked, “Do you understand love?”

The person replied, “I don’t need something that can’t be grasped. Only wealth and power are what I pursue.”

“So?” The person raised an eyebrow. “Are you confident you can seduce Yu Haozhou?”

Xu Yi shrugged: “I can’t do it.”

The person said as he walked away, “When you succeed, that’s when I’ll let you see Wu Yichen.”

Xu Yi cursed and punched the wall hard.

A few days later, Yu Haozhou received a distress call from Han Jin. His voice on the phone was weak, only saying to find him in the inpatient department of the central hospital before hanging up.

Yu Haozhou was utterly confused, but he rushed to the central hospital without delay. Halfway there, he suddenly remembered that he needed to tell Zhou Zizheng he wouldn’t be going over to change his dressing today.

He called Zhou Zizheng’s private number, but his assistant answered the phone. Yu Haozhou recognized him, the young intern named Xu Yi, who had just graduated from high school.

“Mr. Zhou is in a meeting. Is there anything you need to relay, Mr. Yu?”

Yu Haozhou briefly said, “Just tell him something urgent came up, and I won’t be coming over today…”

After a thought, he added, “It’s some trouble with Han Jin. Tell him not to worry.”

Xu Yi replied in a businesslike manner, “Understood.”

Half an hour later, Yu Haozhou found the hospital room Han Jin had mentioned. All the worries he’d had on the way snapped when he saw Han Jin lying prone on the bed, his back covered in wounds: “What happened? How did this happen?”

Han Jin chuckled and even told him to move a chair over to sit down: “Oh, it’s nothing. Just my stubborn old man at home. He doesn’t approve of me marrying Chengcheng, and I refused to back down, so he gave me a taste of the family rules. Ouch, damn it! I’m his only son; I don’t know how he could hit me so hard.”

Yu Haozhou sneered, “If I had a son as brainless as you, I’d beat him too.”

Han Jin clutched his heart in indignation: “Haozi, you’re heartless. I’m like this, and you’re still pouring cold water on me.”

Yu Haozhou stopped joking around and returned to the main topic: “So, you’re fine enough to eat, drink, and relieve yourself. Why did you call me here? I don’t believe you just wanted me to come look at you.”

“Heh heh,” Han Jin chuckled playfully, “I need a small favor. Can you help me look after Chengcheng for a while?”

“What?” Yu Haozhou couldn’t believe it and reacted strongly.

Han Jin sighed: “The old man also said that if Chengcheng gets rid of the child, he’ll let me marry her. But if she aborts it, wouldn’t that be the same as me pushing Chengcheng away with my own hands?”

“So, until I get better, please help me protect Chengcheng. I’m afraid if the old man gets desperate, he’ll force her to have an abortion.”

Yu Haozhou truly wanted to pry open his brother’s skull to see what was inside. Is it filled with water?

His eyebrows were so furrowed they could pinch a mosquito to death: “Does Cheng Qianyu know about this?”

“How would I dare tell her?”

Yu Haozhou closed his eyes weakly: “You are beyond saving.”

“Haozi, help me one more time. I’ll be eternally grateful for this life-saving kindness.”

Yu Haozhou genuinely didn’t want to help.

But he knew Han Jin’s personality—he wouldn’t give up until he hit a brick wall. If he really wanted to solve the problem, he had to start with Cheng Qianyu.

He was just about to ask where she was now.

His phone beeped with a message.

Zhou Zizheng: [Is it serious? Do you need help?]

Yu Haozhou: [No. Go to work. Did you change your dressing?]

Zhou Zizheng: [Grieved.jpg]

Zhou Zizheng: [I did. It hurt a bit, and I accidentally pulled it and made it bleed again.]

Yu Haozhou gritted his teeth: [Got it. I’ll change your dressing before I go out from now on.]

After replying, Yu Haozhou placed the phone face down on the bedside table. The thought that his leaving had even affected the recovery of Zhou Zizheng’s hand only fueled his anger towards Han Jin’s love-struck mind.

Han Jin was oblivious. He was just watching his good brother’s unusually gentle brows and occasional smiles while texting, happiness practically overflowing. He felt a bit jealous.

When could he and Cheng Qianyu be like this? Or rather, could he ever have this kind of happiness?

Someone knocked on the door: “May I come in?”

It was Cheng Qianyu. She had come to bring Han Jin food. Seeing Yu Haozhou there, she didn’t show much surprise and skillfully opened the thermos: “Want to eat together?”

Yu Haozhou politely declined.

Han Jin was severely injured from his back down to his tailbone and couldn’t sit up, so he had to lie prone and be fed. Yu Haozhou naturally took the lunchbox, but as he was about to feed him, Cheng Qianyu used some force and prevented him from taking it: “I’ll feed him. You can’t always be watching him. I’ll get used to feeding him after a few meals.”

Yu Haozhou didn’t feel relieved. Instead, he felt that Cheng Qianyu seemed determined to cling to Han Jin, and then he looked at Han Jin’s utterly confused and delighted expression.

They truly were a case of “one willing to give, one willing to receive.”

The meal finished quietly. Yu Haozhou planned to find an excuse to talk to Cheng Qianyu alone. Unexpectedly, she spoke first: “Do you mind talking?”

Han Jin immediately looked at her nervously.

Then he looked at Yu Haozhou, silently saying, “Brother, don’t. What do you two have to talk about?”

Under Han Jin’s insistent head-shaking, Yu Haozhou agreed.

They went to the empty corridor and found a bench to sit down on. Yu Haozhou looked at her not-yet-protruding belly and preemptively asked, “Is the child Han Jin’s?”

Cheng Qianyu gave a wry smile, lowering her head and touching her belly. Although it wasn’t yet formed, a maternal glow seemed to envelop her: “How long have you known Han Jin?”

Although he didn’t understand the necessity of the question, Yu Haozhou answered truthfully: “Five years.”

“Then do you understand him?”

Yu Haozhou affirmed emphatically, “No one understands him better than I do.”

Cheng Qianyu lowered her head, the corners of her lips turning up: “Then do you know that he blacks out when he drinks?”

Yu Haozhou remained confident: “Of course. That kid easily blacks out when he drinks, so I usually record his misdeeds.”

Cheng Qianyu stated a date precisely: “The child was conceived that night, but he forgot.”

Yu Haozhou: “…”

Yu Haozhou had considered countless possibilities, but he hadn’t thought it would be this seemingly least reliable excuse. Blacking out is one thing, but if he did something like that, surely Han Jin wouldn’t feel nothing?

Yu Haozhou remained skeptical.

Cheng Qianyu’s words also held a hint of bitterness: “When I found out I was pregnant, my first reaction was to abort it. If I could, I wouldn’t want to be tied to him in any way.”
