VGSB Chapter 49

You Should Look at Me

“Mr. Ling, I’m so sorry, the child is young and spoiled at home. He’s a bit of a germaphobe… But that’s not a big problem. He’ll definitely cooperate well and not cause any trouble if he comes to the kindegarten!”

The woman standing at the door smiled apologetically at Ling Huan.

She didn’t expect Ling Huan to open the door so quickly. Her son was so outspoken; she wondered if Ling Huan had heard what he said.

What may have seemed clean to adults can appear dirty to children. They speak without thinking, and if someone actually heard it, they’ll definitely be unhappy.

The woman patted the little peacock’s proudly held head, frowned, and said quickly, “Shen Zhuoyu, greet him. What did I teach you at home? If you really don’t want to go to kindergarten this year, then keep sticking your neck out like that.”

These days, it was hard to find and get accepted into a kindergarten. Little Moon Daycare Center, where Shen Zhuoyu had already enrolled, suddenly asked him to leave. Luckily, a new, officially hired caretaker[footnote]Raw饲养员(sìyǎng yuan); zookeeper; stockman; breeder (of livestock, dogs or poultry etc). I suddenly realize I can use “Caretaker” instead of “Breeder”, I might using both alternately[/footnote]suddenly appeared on their website these past two days, so she quickly brought her child to check it out.

Ling Huan bent down slightly, looking at the peacock that was only as tall as his thigh. He slowly extended a bit of his spiritual energy, trying to ease the tense atmosphere, and spoke gently.

“The nursery is just starting out, and the interior decoration was only completed in the last two days. The entrance may not have been cleaned properly. Please tell me if there are any dirty spots, and it will definitely be clean by tomorrow.”

Shen Zhuoyu, who had just been pacing around anxiously and picking on everything, looked up at Ling Huan, somewhat stunned.

From the moment the door opened and he looked up to see Ling Huan until now, he has been in a daze.

He wonder if there were a lot of scented sachets in this nursery. The door was only half open, and when the stranger breeder stood in front of him, he could smell a fragrant and warm scent, like the sun he can feel when he snuggled in bed with his eyes closed at nine in the morning.

He couldn’t help but want to get a little closer.

He knew that Ling Huan was a newly appointed breeder, and there seemed to be only one child in the yard at the moment. His mother had been worried at home that since everyone paid the same tuition, she didn’t know if the new breeder was reliable.

The intense resistance vanished the moment he saw Ling Huan.

His tail was practically begging to open!

“Is it…dirty?” Shen Zhuoyu looked at Ling Huan’s face so close to his own and suddenly stammered. He tilted his head to the side so that he could see Ling Huan more easily, and also so that Ling Huan could see his particularly beautiful plumage that he was so proud of. He shook his head back and forth a couple of times.

“I looked at it again, and it seems alright… um, it’s pretty clean.”

“I need to see inside first, let me go in and take a look…”

As soon as Ling Huan stood up, the impatient little peacock rubbed against his leg, and he heard the hurried “pitter-patter” sound of its claws hitting the ground, like it was wearing a little shoe with heels.

Shen Zhuoyu craned his neck and muttered softly, “I’ll go in and check.”

Ling Huan smiled slightly, opened the door fully, and gestured for them to come in. He looked up at the two adults at the door and said, “Why don’t you come in and take a look?”

“Yes, Mr. Ling.” Mrs. Shen excitedly tugged at Mr. Shen, who had been silent all along. “Zhuoyu likes this place! Look how happy he is! He refused to come to the two places we looked for before, and we had to drag him in by force. After almost a month of this, he can finally go to kindergarten. I thought he would stay at home for another three or four years.”

Mr. Shen, dressed in a suit and tie, was a very refined-looking man. He patted the woman’s hand and said, “Zhuoyu is not a hairy alpha, and it’s not necessarily mandatory for him to attend kindergarten.”

“That won’t do,” Mrs. Shen said reproachfully. “We booked a tour group for next month, and if Zhuoyu doesn’t come to the nursery, it’ll definitely be canceled.”

She walked quickly to Ling Huan’s side, shook her arm energetically, and showed Ling Huan the excellent green safety certification.

“Mr. Ling, the reason why Zhuoyu was returned by Little Moon Nursery was not because he hurt other children. He is not dangerous at all and never scratch anyone.”

She sighed.

“He’s always so picky. Because his strength rating is S, he thinks his peers are weak and stupid. Breeder No. 6 said that although he didn’t physically attack anyone after he went in, he did psychologically attack the Breeders and other children. He just likes to mock others.”

Mrs. Shen took out another piece of paper and quickly assured him, “Mr. Ling can rest assured about this now. I have given him a serious talking-to when we got home. If he goes back to kindergarten this time, he definitely won’t be like before. He has deeply realized his mistakes. This is the letter of self-criticism he wrote last night.”

Ling Huan took the crumpled paper and glanced at it. Several words were written crookedly on it, along with many symbols. At a glance, he noticed the line that was written with the most forceful strokes.

—If you can’t even drive a manual transmission aircraft, how will you fly a starship when you grow up? I could drive the tractor in the garden when I was three years old. The classmate who assigned me to this job is really too stupid (crossed out) cute.

Ling Huan coughed lightly and said, “Okay, I understand.”

He had a brief exchange with Shen Zhuoyu just now, and he didn’t feel that Shen Zhuoyu was being aggressive. It seemed that he will need to observe him for a while after he enters the nursery

However, it was clear that Shen Zhuoyu spoke clearly and logically. Although his obsessive-compulsive disorder was a headache, he must be a particularly smart kid.

“We’ll pay double the price. If there are any problems with Zuoyu, we’ll communicate promptly, and I’ll discipline him anytime.”

Mother Shen took out a personal information document, a stamped and invalidated form with an admission certificate crossed out in red pen, and a headshot of Shen Zhuoyu from her bag, and showed them to Ling Huan.

“Mr. Ling, please check if everything is complete. This is our first time doing this, so we’re a bit flustered. We live nearby, so if anything is missing, I’ll go home and get it right away.”

Ling Huan glanced at it, then subtly pushed away Shen’s mother’s wrist as she reached for his personal terminal, stating upfront, “Everything is complete. You don’t need to pay double; just pay the normal amount. We Breeders always keep detailed records of the money we receive.”

Mother Shen readily agreed and transferred the normal tuition fee to him.

Ling Huan breathed a slight sigh of relief. If all the personnel could be finalized smoothly, there would only be four cubs in this class, which he should be able to manage.

The fabric of his trousers brushed against something soft, and looking down, he saw Shen Zhuoyu twirling around him with haughty little steps. The deep blue feathers on Shen Zhuoyu’s head fluttered lightly, and he seemed to be in a good mood. He tilted his head to look at Ling Huan, giving him a very high evaluation.

“It’s not bad inside, you cleaned it quite well. It’s just that I just looked at the fruit list you posted on the wall for the baby, and there are ten kinds of fruit on it that are not available…”

Shen Zhuoyu’s voice rose slightly with dissatisfaction. His mother gave him a stern look, and he immediately shook his tail feathers without fear, saying tactfully, “It would be even better if you added a pear.”

“You like to eat pears?”

Shen Zhuoyu snorted twice, “I don’t like to eat it, I just wanted you to add it.”

“Zhuoyu’s suggestion was really helpful. I just finished making a list and plan to buy fresh pears when the nursery officially opens. Since you like them, how about we buy pears first?”

“There’s no need to be the first one…”

Feeling suddenly cared for and valued so much, and even understood when he said the opposite of what he meant, Shen Zhuoyu felt a little embarrassed and scratched his paw on the ground, casting a shadow in front of him.

He looked up and saw a long, slender, fair hand reaching out towards him.

His heart skipped a beat.

Thinking that Ling Huan was going to touch his head, he immediately closed his eyes in a panic, but the expected pat did not come.

Guessing that Ling Huan might be standing too far away, Shen Zhuoyu closed his eyes and took a few steps forward, tentatively extending his neck toward Ling Huan’s position, only to bump his head into Ling Huan’s leg.

When he opened his eyes again, he saw that Ling Huan had withdrawn his hand, his well-defined fingertips pinching a very small leaf.

It was just taken off his feathers.

Ling Huan’s voice, tinged with laughter, came from beside him, “Did Zhuoyu just go to the small garden through the back door? There were leaves on your head, I just took them off for you.”

Shen Zhuoyu lowered his head slightly, blinked his eyes with a hint of disappointment, and gave a dry “oh”.

It turns out he was just helping him pick leaves.

As he approached Ling Huan, his tail feathers, which had been half-spread, drooped down. Shen Zhuoyu suddenly felt an extremely dangerous aura emanating from behind him.

Alpha cubs do not emit pheromones themselves when in their beast form, nor can they sense pheromones in their surroundings.

However, he keenly sensed that his tail feathers were lightly touched by someone’s fingertips, and the voice behind him was both soft and cold.

“Put it away.”

He jerked his tail in alarm and snapped it shut.

He stiffly turned his neck and was suddenly confronted by a man wearing a black wide-brimmed hat that almost covered half of his face, with only his tightly pursed thin lips visible.

Completely unaware of when Lu Jinbei arrived, Ling Huan felt the pheromones that had been flowing from the man’s side down to the ground and then spreading rapidly towards him, gently touching his trouser leg. He inwardly cried out in alarm.

“What are you doing!” Ling Huan stepped forward abruptly, pulling Lu Jinbei’s hand away from the other child’s tail. He hurriedly pulled Lu Jinbei’s hat down further and said in a low voice, “The parents are right here, how could you pull his tail?”

Fortunately, the two parents were standing far away and didn’t notice what was happening; they were excitedly looking at the glass roof.

Lu Jinbei’s voice was icy cold, ” He spreads his tail feathers at you.”

“When a peacock encounters someone it wants to attract, it will spread its tail feathers. How tall is he? He can’t even change back into human form yet, and he already wants you to look at him. He’s simply overestimating himself.”

“You know he’s only a few years old! He’s just a child!” Ling Huan said, exasperated. “What’s wrong with me looking at him. Didn’t I just tell you to sit over there and not come over?”

If Lu Jinbei hadn’t reminded him, he wouldn’t have noticed that Shen Zhuoyu’s display of such a small amount of tail feathers was considered a full display.

“His tail feathers are ugly.”

“You should look at mine.”
