Most of the tourists went to the second-floor deck to enjoy the view, but after a short while, the wind blew them back inside the cabin.
Lin Yi and Xu Shuyan had bought VIP tickets, which came with a private room on the second floor. Lin Yi pulled the curtain shut, took off her mask and stuffed it in her pocket, then smoothed down her wind-tousled hair. “This wind is way too strong!”
“But the weather is nice,” Xu Shuyan said. The black beret she wore hadn’t moved an inch. She rested her arms on the small square table, gazing out the window at the sparkling sea under the sun. Then she looked up at Lin Yi, her eyes curving into a smile. “My wife is so beautiful.”
Lin Yi quickly made a hushing gesture. “Keep it down! Don’t go around calling me ‘wife’ all the time. What if someone hears you?”
Xu Shuyan was unconcerned. “Let them hear. We can get our marriage certificate soon anyway.”
Lin Yi rested her chin on her hand and smiled too. “That’s true.”
Lin Yi chuckled to herself. This Xu Shuyan, she thought. She tricks me onto this boat and isn’t even afraid I know she’s going to propose. She’s being so blunt about it. But-
Lin Yi fretted. When Xu Shuyan proposed later, what expression should she make? Surprise? Shock? Tears? What if there was a hidden camera filming her? Crying would look so bad. Looking back on it later, it would make her seem like such a crybaby.
But Xu Shuyan had surely prepared a lot of romantic words, and she would definitely cry. In that case, she would have to say something sentimental too, to make Xu Shuyan cry as well. They could both bawl their eyes out together, and then bury the video deep in a chest, never to be seen again.

“What’s going on?” Xu Shuyan stood up to look outside.
“Attention passengers, please remain in your seats and fasten your seatbelts.” The crew member’s voice came over the intercom. “Due to strong winds today, some turbulence is normal. Please do not be alarmed. We have twenty minutes remaining on our journey to Wind Ferry Pier on Green Origin Island.”
Lin Yi quickly pulled Xu Shuyan back down. “Hurry and fasten your seatbelt.”
The ferry was rocking violently, and even her hands were trembling as she tried to buckle her seatbelt. Lin Yi pushed Xu Shuyan down into her seat, reached over to pull out the seatbelt, and buckled it for her. Before she could return to her own seat, she stumbled, and Xu Shuyan cried out, grabbing her hand.
She gripped it tightly, the pale blue veins on the back of her hand clearly visible.
“I’m fine.” Lin Yi’s heart lurched with the boat. She steadied herself on the table and gave Xu Shuyan a reassuring smile, her thumb stroking the back of Xu Shuyan’s hand. “Don’t let go of me, okay?”
Xu Shuyan watched her worriedly. “Be careful.”
Lin Yi said, “I know.”
Still holding her hand, she slowly shuffled over to her seat. She pulled out the seatbelt first, then let go of Xu Shuyan’s hand, sat down quickly, and fastened her own belt as fast as she could.
Coincidentally, the squall came and went quickly. Once it passed, the sea outside the window was calm again.
But neither Xu Shuyan nor Lin Yi had ever lived by the sea. To someone who grew up by the coast, this bit of wind and waves was nothing, but for the two of them, experiencing it right before such a momentous occasion felt no different from being reborn.
“That was so scary.” Lin Yi took Xu Shuyan’s hand again, rubbing it against her cheek. “My heart was about to jump out of my chest.”
Xu Shuyan caressed her face. “Don’t be scared.”
Even as she said it, she was still shaken. Life is so unpredictable, she thought. You never know what will happen in the next second. And naive humans are always waiting for this or that, waiting until one hope is dashed, only to make another.
She didn’t want to wait anymore.
Xu Shuyan looked at Lin Yi, gazing into her eyes.
Lin Yi asked, “What are you thinking about?”
Xu Shuyan hummed a long, low note. She rested her arms on the table and lowered her gaze, her long eyelashes casting shadows on her face. The wind picked up again outside, but its howling was muffled by the thick glass, making their little space feel even quieter.
“Lin Yi,” Xu Shuyan began, thinking of all the moving, romantic words she had prepared for this proposal. They swirled in her throat, but when she opened her mouth, what came out was, “I actually went to one of your concerts in secret.”
Lin Yi’s eyes widened slightly.
“The one in Mountain City.” Xu Shuyan smiled, her tone casual but filled with affection. “I bought the ticket myself. It was a nosebleed seat, but I could see the whole stage clearly.”
“I was afraid of being recognized by fans, so I went late. When I arrived, you were singing our song, ‘The Curtain Falls.’ I love the rearranged version. You were sitting in the light, wearing a white dress, and your singing was so quiet and ethereal. In that moment, the image of you overlapped with the tiny figure I first saw on the streets of S City, and it suddenly hit me-ah, my girl, she’s all grown up.”
Lin Yi’s eyes grew red. She whispered, “What are you doing, Xu Shuyan?”
Xu Shuyan smiled at her. “Let me finish.”
