Chapter 28.7
Wen Heng grinned at Shen Liang. “Shen Daoyou, you’re quite the expert. I’ve never ridden a flying sword before! Though yours is a bit cramped—look, just the two of us are packed in like sardines. Even Wushang has no room to stand.”
Shen Liang’s mouth twitched. This beggar was deliberately undermining him! But with Lian Wushang present, he couldn’t very well say anything. He could only grit his teeth and enlarge the flying sword: “My oversight, Fellow Daoist Wu. Please, come aboard.”
Wen Heng gasped repeatedly: “Wow! Wushang, hurry up! Fellow Daoist Shen’s flying sword can actually expand this large!”
Lian Wushang’s expression remained composed, but if one looked closely, a hint of amusement flickered in his eyes. Shen Liang didn’t give Wen Heng the time of day; in his eyes, Wen Heng was nothing more than a vermin. Yet Shen Liang was genuinely disgusted by Wen Heng. All he could think about now was returning to Qingcheng Sect and tempering his flying sword a hundred times over with divine sense and spiritual fire.
The flying sword lifted all three into the air. It was Wen Heng’s first time soaring through the sky, his eyes fixed on the scenery below. From this height, the mortals of Qingcheng Town looked like ants. No wonder cultivators held them in such contempt. The world unfolded before Wen Heng in a new light, plunging him into an indescribable state.
“What’s wrong?” Lian Wushang noticed Wen Heng gripping the branch of the Ding Tian Giant Tree tightly, seemingly lost in thought. Wen Heng offered a smile. “First time riding a flying sword. Feeling a bit nervous.”
Shen Liang, standing at the very front of the flying sword, turned dark with displeasure.
The flying sword didn’t soar for long before descending, landing at the entrance of a grand mansion. The household was clearly wealthy; the two stone lions guarding the gate seemed almost alive. As Shen Liang’s flying sword touched down, the stone lions even shook their heads and wagged their tails in his direction.
The Shen residence’s gate was carved from blue stone, flanked by side entrances. The main gate alone was wider than the entire dilapidated temple they’d just left. Beyond the entrance stood a stone screen carved with majestic mountain landscapes. Ancient trees, sturdy and vigorous, stood on either side of the screen.
Wen Heng glanced at the Shen residence’s entrance. He couldn’t afford to buy even the cheapest thing dragged out from there.
Several people were jostling near the entrance. Shen Si clung to a man clad in dark robes, sobbing, “Second Brother! Second Brother! Plead with First Brother! Make him forgive me!” Shen Er, whom Shen Si was hugging, groaned with a headache. “Get up already…”
The Shen family ranked among Qingcheng Town’s most prominent households, wielding wealth, influence, and power. The eldest, Shen Liang, was the backbone of the Qingcheng Sect. The second son, Shen Gong, lacking innate cultivation talent, pursued scholarly pursuits and had become the town’s magistrate. It was precisely because of Shen Gong and Shen Liang that a magnificent barrier now protected Qingcheng Town.
The third son, Shen Jian, was a merchant. Under the protection of his two elder brothers, his business had grown immensely. The three brothers were close and respectful to one another. When the Shen brothers stomped their feet at home, the entire town of Qingcheng trembled.
Doesn’t something feel off? If the three brothers are so capable, what about the fourth? The fourth son, Shen Rang, grew up as a spoiled playboy under his brothers’ wings. While everyone praised the first three Shen brothers, mentioning the fourth only drew sighs. Yet even in his debauchery, his life was better than most.
