“Duan Kai.”

Duan Kai looked up, staring with a face full of sheer terror at Zhou Zefeng, who had actually initiated a conversation with him. He suspected his ears were playing tricks on him.

“…What?” Duan Kai assumed a defensive posture, terrified that Zhou Zefeng might suddenly throw a punch.

Half a month had already passed since that incident. In truth, Duan Kai had regretted it the moment Zhou Zefeng walked out the door that day. His actions had been driven purely by a momentary impulse, but once an arrow is shot, there is no turning back. When he received Zhou Zefeng’s text, he was still debating whether he should go stay somewhere else for a while to lay low.

He had kept his eyes open until the early hours of the morning. When he heard Zhou Zefeng enter the dorm, he held his breath and listened intently to every movement while trembling with fear until Zhou Zefeng got into bed. Yet, to his surprise, the heavy fists never came.

You can hide for a while, but you can’t hide forever. Sometime after that, Zhou Zefeng did give Duan Kai a beating. Knowing he was in the wrong, Duan Kai apologized to him, but Zhou Zefeng stopped speaking to him entirely after that. The heavy boulder in Duan Kai’s heart had never truly lifted; he was constantly terrified that Lu Zhao would post the video. If that happened, he’d probably get beaten by Zhou Zefeng again, and it might even bring the disaster of a school disciplinary action upon him.

Duan Kai thought doom had finally arrived, but instead, Zhou Zefeng said, “…Lend me those notes from last semester. I need to catch up on some classes.”

Like someone walking in a dream, Duan Kai handed the notes to Zhou Zefeng, still unable to fully snap out of it.

Zhou Zefeng returned to his desk, scratching his head in sheer frustration.

He still hadn’t been able to ask.

Ever since he had that peaceful night’s sleep, Zhou Zefeng had returned to his state of insomnia. He was truly done with Lu Zhao, so he hadn’t been lying after all; he really was a Chinese medicine doctor who could treat insomnia, just that his methods were a bit unconventional.
