The use of assertive statements, rather than questions, made it seem like a direct judgment was passed upon meeting someone.
The ever-present suit, the stern gaze, the impeccably groomed hair even in a survival game—who else could it be but the essential supporting male character in the novel, Zuo Chu?
The domineering CEO Zuo Chu, adored by countless girls and even more popular than the male protagonist due to his overpowered settings, is naturally one of the spare tires adding to the female lead Ji Yun’s allure.
However, this man, who carries a mocking aura towards almost everyone, has always been disliked by Qin Dongwan, especially after he frequently opposed Luo Shu, a character known as the “little boss,” and caused her to suffer repeatedly, making Qin Dongwan’s impression of him plummet.
Apart from his admiration for the female lead, he is arrogant, even disregarding the organizers at the beginning.
Luo Shu, as the malicious supporting female character, opposes the female lead as a basic skill, and regardless of who is right or wrong, Zuo Chu and other male supporting characters are inevitably the female lead’s supporters.
What Qin Dongwan dislikes most about this “cheating” is that all seemingly excellent men become utterly without principles for the sake of the female lead, always believing her to be right, thus disregarding the lives and existence of others.
Why must supporting characters exist merely to highlight the protagonist’s intelligence and be trampled underfoot?
“No matter why we came out here, I’m afraid, sir, that you are the one with ulterior motives, right?”
Sensing Luo Shu’s restless movements behind her, Qin Dongwan knew she had to deal with Zuo Chu before Luo Shu erupted, or the consequences would be dire.
“We’re just two girls, defenseless, and you’re a man holding a weapon, following us in the middle of the night. Are you here to rob or assault us?”
Knowing Zuo Chu would only fancy someone like Ji Yun, Qin Dongwan, who disliked him, spared no effort to disgust him. Watching his handsome face gradually cloud over, she pulled Luo Shu back a step, increasing the distance between them.
The man’s eyes, like a hawk, gleamed in the dark night, emitting a dangerous signal that Qin Dongwan received but did not take to heart. Instead, she was annoyed that her quest for food in the kitchen was disrupted by him, souring her mood.
After a brief standoff, Zuo Chu snorted coldly, took a long stride, and left.
Qin Dongwan knew he wasn’t afraid of her; it was just his nature. Seeing two girls not appearing to do anything wrong, he couldn’t be bothered to engage. Yet, a sense of uncontainable joy surged in her heart, curving her lips into a slight smile as she looked at Luo Shu with playful warmth.
“Take a mirror and look at yourself. You have a look of smug satisfaction,” Luo Shu mocked unceremoniously, feeling a strange emotion. Recalling how Qin Dongwan instinctively protected her earlier, despite her firm voice, her hand holding the knife had been trembling slightly.
In this game, Luo Shu had seen all kinds of cowards and those who, for survival, would sell out their partners without hesitation. She thought charging ahead recklessly would be her eternal way of handling things, but seeing Zuo Chu’s defeated back because of Qin Dongwan’s words, she suddenly found this quite nice.
Qin Dongwan, not being a mind reader, had no idea what Luo Shu was thinking. She only instructed Luo Shu to keep watch at the door while she searched the kitchen.
After some time, she found an unopened loaf of bread in an inconspicuous corner. Though dry and unappetizing, it was at least unopened and presumably safe to eat.
As the sound of their eating mixed with an unsettling noise, like someone dragging a chair across the floor, the strong disinfectant smell couldn’t mask the scent of blood in the air. Qin Dongwan, instantly alert, swallowed her food and stepped forward, gripping the knife handle tightly, and heard the sound coming closer.
Her attire made moving around inconvenient, and she dared not wander aimlessly, but she finally understood. The outside rustling had turned into chewing and gnawing sounds, accompanied by a girl’s painful whimper. Qin Dongwan suddenly recalled the original book’s plot. After a moment’s hesitation, she quickly lit a candle and went out.
Blood trails led to the garden door, becoming thicker with each step. Alarmed, she forced herself to look out the window. The night, shrouded in pouring rain, made the half-exposed remains on the lawn glaringly obvious.
The dead one should be the delinquent girl, now reduced to a pile of bones, only recognizable by the tattered clothes suggesting her fairy tale identity akin to “Little Red Riding Hood.”
Luo Shu hadn’t followed. Qin Dongwan noticed wet footprints trailing from the stairs to her feet, mixing mud and blood, filling the first floor with an unavoidable stench.
The gnawing sound was now close, indicating someone was chewing a bone, the rough tongue licking blood. Qin Dongwan felt a chill up her spine, realizing the wolf hadn’t left. She decisively leaned against the wall, holding the candle towards the door’s crack, locking eyes with a pair of eerie green eyes.
The wolf, its mouth dripping with saliva, held a half-eaten intestine, casually thrown on the floor. Its red gums, stained with meat remnants, showed a satisfied look but hesitated to leave, perhaps hearing Qin Dongwan approaching, preparing for another fight.
For some reason, it hesitated to come in.
Seeing the small figure standing nearby, Qin Dongwan felt more secure and was about to leave. The gray wolf, unwilling to let go of its prey, hesitated briefly before charging in like an arrow.
Qin Dongwan, muscles tense, a drop of sweat silently sliding down her forehead, threw the candle just as the wolf’s front paws landed, hitting it precisely. The scent of burning fur filled the air, fire crackling, licking at its gray fur.
The wolf’s fear of fire exceeded Qin Dongwan’s expectations, slightly easing her tension. Seizing the opportunity, she stabbed the knife into the wolf’s muscle, blood splattering, a wail echoing through the villa.
The sound of high heels “tap-tap” followed, and Luo Shu swiftly and decisively finished off the wolf. The silver blade gleamed in the dark, blood droplets forming a string. Qin Dongwan exhaled, kicked the still-warm corpse aside, and quickly walked outside.
The delinquent girl’s remaining half was in shreds. Qin Dongwan regretfully covered her torn red clothes, barely enough to conceal her.
A nearly intact hand clutched something tightly. Gathering courage, Qin Dongwan pried it open, revealing a floral-engraved metal key, its dull sheen obscured by blood.
The stench of burning fur began to permeate the air, soon overpowering the disinfectant smell. Realizing the disinfectant was meant to mask scents, Qin Dongwan hurriedly pulled Luo Shu upstairs, sensing something was wrong.
Despite the dead wolf on the ground, her keen instincts picked up on something unusual in the castle.
“Ashu, let’s go. It doesn’t seem safe here.”
Qin Dongwan took one last look at the delinquent girl and the wolf’s bodies, grabbed Luo Shu’s hand, and headed upstairs. As they disappeared, a grating sound of “creak-creak” echoed, the scattered limbs and bones merging with the rain, slowly piecing together.
Fractured bones collided and squeezed, reluctantly forming a humanoid shape.
Blood-soaked flesh reformed within the skeletal frame at an alarming speed, red clothes covering it. The girl’s sweet face twisted slightly. She smiled, an eerie curve, her empty eyes still filled with blood, as she looked at the faint light in the forest.
She staggered upstairs, leaving a trail of blood behind.
A faint sound brushed by, like a door blown open by the wind. Qin Dongwan, half-asleep, turned over and quickly fell back into a deep sleep.
Even with the difficulty increase, novice-level dungeons offer a respite. After encountering ghosts twice, a third appearance won’t happen shortly, providing a breathing space.
The night grew darker, stars flickering in the deep forest. Bloodstains stopped at an open door and disappeared. The “crunch-crunch” of chewing was muffled by the wind, all the scent settling into the dense disinfectant smell, leaving no trace.
“Wake up, everyone! Someone’s missing!”
Qin Dongwan was awakened by loud knocking the next morning, an anxious girl knocking on each door. Without seeing her, the urgency and guilt in her voice were palpable, with a hint of tears:
“That boy… he was dragged into the forest by a monster to save me!”
