“Alright,” I said, closing my eyes at their urging.

But sleep wouldn’t come. Partly because I couldn’t calm my nerves. But mostly because every few minutes, they would press their ears to my chest to check if I was breathing.

“…Jade, Lien, I’m alive, okay? You’re making it impossible to sleep,” I finally said.

“Ah, s-sorry, Nii-sama…”

“I’m so sorry…”

“Hehe, it’s okay. It just tickled a little, that’s all,” I said with a chuckle, and their anxious expressions eased a little.

“We wanted to let you rest, Nii-san, but… we couldn’t stop worrying…”

“I’m sorry…”

“You don’t need to apologize. I can feel how much you two care about me. Besides, I can’t seem to fall asleep either… So, I think I’ll stay up with you tonight.”

I sat up in bed, lit the lantern on the desk, grabbed a blanket, and moved from the bed to the sofa. As the three of us huddled together, memories of the past came flooding back.

“Remember that time we stayed up late like this, the three of us…”

“That time? Oh, do you mean when you were sitting alone in the living room in the middle of the night, Charles Nii-san?”

“Yeah.”

“Oh! That’s when I thought you were a ghost, Charles Nii-sama, and begged Jade Nii-sama to exorcise you!”

“Now that you mention it, Lien came crying to me, saying he was scared of ghosts.”

“I did not cry!”

As we shared these nostalgic memories, the conversation grew lively.

I couldn’t help but feel nostalgic for the days when I only saw them as my younger stepbrothers. Back then, I was terrified that our father and mother would die again, just like the first time.

But they stayed by my side through it all. Their kindness meant so much to me that I swore I would make them happy.

Along with the fond memories, the feelings I had for them since this second chance at life began to grow even stronger.

“You know, because of you two, I’ve been able to live such a happy life. I promised to make you happy, but now that I think about it, I’ve been the one receiving all the happiness.”

“That’s not true. It’s us who’ve received so much happiness from you, Charles Nii-sama.”

“That’s right. Just having you with us makes us happy.”

“Yeah. That’s why… I’ll never die. I want to keep living with Jade and Lien. It has to be the three of us. I’ll make you both happy, so stay with me forever.”

Back then, I only wanted them to be happy. But now, it’s different.

We can’t be without one another. We have to find happiness together as three.

When I said that, Jade and Lien’s lips tightened, and their bodies trembled slightly.

Their amethyst eyes glistened, on the verge of tears.

“Huh? What’s wrong, you two…? Whoa!”

Just as I spoke, they both threw themselves into my chest.

“To think the day would come when Charles Nii-san proposes to us… I promise to make you happy too.”

“We’re so, so happy right now, Charles Nii-sama. We love you so much. From now on, we’ll make sure to give you lots of happiness too.”

“Ah, thank you, Jade, Lien.”

After exchanging embarrassed smiles, the three of us sealed our vows with a kiss.

Then we spent the rest of the night reminiscing. When I asked them when they started liking me, Jade said it was around when he was fourteen, and Lien confessed he’d loved me since we first met.

Hearing how long they’d harbored feelings for me filled me with overwhelming happiness.

As we talked, time flew by.

“Nii-san, the sun’s about to rise.”

“Yeah, it is…”

The pale dawn light began to brighten the room.

We extinguished the lantern and looked outside together, where the dazzling morning sun was breaking through.

“Charles Nii-sama, morning has finally come. Your hand… it’s warm…”

“Yeah, Charles Nii-san’s hand is so warm…”

Jade and Lien carefully held my hand in theirs, and I felt the warmth of their touch, a vivid reminder that I was alive. The thought of spending more days like this with them filled my chest with emotion.

―――I can stay with Jade and Lien from now on.

With that thought, the three of us watched the sunrise together for the first time, a sight I missed in my first life. I gripped their hands tightly, vowing to protect this happiness.

Every day in this second life, surrounded by the family I love, feels fresh and full of joy.

“Charles Nii-sama~! It’s morning! Wake up! You promised we’d go on a picnic today!”

“That’s right, Nii-sama! If you don’t get up soon, I’ll eat all the sandwiches by myself!”

“Alright, alright, I’m getting up…”

Sophia and Armand, sitting on my stomach, ran out of the room yelling, “Next is Jade Nii-sama~!” as soon as I opened my eyes.

The room was still dim, and I had clearly been woken up earlier than usual. Rubbing my eyes, I made my way to the living room.

When I arrived, I found Lien, who had already been woken up, curled up under a blanket on the sofa, yawning loudly.

“Good morning, Charles Nii-sama. Did those two wake you up too?”

“Yeah. They’re full of energy this morning.”

When I sat down on the sofa where Lien was lying, he snuggled up to me, and I patted his head. He closed his eyes, looking content.

“Mmm… I could fall asleep like this…”

“Haha, you can’t do that, Lien. If you do, Sophia and Armand will just come and wake you up again.”

As I tried to keep Lien from dozing off, the living room door opened, and our mother and father entered. Mother carried a tray with drinks and handed us warm beverages.

“Hehe, you both still look sleepy. And Charles, you’ve even got a cute little bedhead.”

“Ah…”

My mother poked the stubborn cowlick sticking up from my hair, and I hastily tried to smooth it down with my hands, but it was no use. While everyone chuckled at my futile attempt, the sound of lively footsteps grew closer, and Armand and Sophia burst into the room. Behind them, half-asleep, was Jade, being pulled along by the two of them.

“Come on, Jade Nii-sama! Wake up properly!”

“Jade Nii-sama just wouldn’t wake up!”

“Nnn… I’m awake… I am…”

“Ahh! You fell asleep again!”

The perpetually sleepy Jade apologized with a sheepish “Sorry…” when scolded by the two. After a sip of his drink, he finally seemed to wake up.

“Good morning, Jade.”

“Good morning, Nii-san. Your cowlick is adorable, you know.”

“Don’t mention it…”

Even Jade, who had been groggy until moments ago, poked at my hair. Sophia and Armand joined in, gleefully declaring, “Nii-sama’s cowlick is so cute~!”

With Armand and Sophia’s sixth birthday approaching, I had asked them what they wanted. They both exclaimed in unison, “We want to go on a picnic with everyone!” To grant their wish, we decided to take the family on a picnic by the nearby lake today.

*Translator’s Note: For Japanese people, when you say you want to take care of someone forever or to stay with them forever, it’s akin to proposing. Just so you know… -K

*GLOSSARY:

  • Nii-san/Nii-sama/Onii-san = (Big/Elder) Brother

☝🏻I’ll be using these throughout my translation. Jade would call Charles ‘Nii-san’ while Lien would call him ‘Nii-sama’.
