“Jade, Lien, listen calmly. In my first life… I died three days from now.”

“What…?”

“Huh…?”

Both of them froze, wide-eyed. Then, they suddenly lunged toward me and hugged me tightly.

“Whoa!”

“No, no, no! You can’t die! Absolutely not! Was it an accident? An illness? You weren’t… murdered, were you?”

“Uh, well… it was an illness in the end.”

“In the end…? Was there something that worsened your condition before that?”

“Yeah. I couldn’t adapt to life as a slave, and I got sick. Then I caught a contagious disease…”

Their faces twisted with concern, as if they were about to cry. For a moment, I regretted telling them, thinking it might have been better to stay silent.

“Sorry. I shouldn’t have said anything.”

“No, it’s better this way. Even though I don’t want to think about you dying, we’ll do everything we can. First, Charles Nii-san, you need to rest for the next three days. No work.”

“Yeah! Jade or I will stay with you at all times, so if you feel even a little unwell, let us know immediately!”

“Huh!? That’s too much. I’m perfectly healthy! Besides, I have so much work piled up. I can’t just take time off…”

I glanced at the towering stack of reports on my desk, but neither of them would hear it.

“Don’t worry about work. Lien and I will handle it.”

“But…”

“Charles Nii-san, leave it to us. Your job is to rest.”

“Ugh…”

The two of them exuded an atmosphere that left no room for argument, leaving me with no choice but to keep quiet. It was obvious that any objections would only be shot down.

“I understand…” I nodded, and was immediately escorted to my room to change into loungewear.

“Even though it’s been warmer lately, the mornings are still chilly. Lien, bring an extra blanket.”

“Got it~! I’ll also grab anything else that looks like it might come in handy.”

“Please do.”

“Jade, you don’t need to go that far…”

“Don’t worry about it, Nii-san. You’ve been working late nights recently, so take this time to rest properly.”

Jade said this while gently brushing my cheek and smiling. They bundled me up warmly to prevent me from getting cold, making me look like a fully-fledged patient. Then, the two of them began preparing to move their own belongings—clothes and daily necessities—into my room.

“Wait, are you planning to stay in my room the whole time?”

“Yes, that’s exactly what we’re planning. We want to stay close in case something happens to you.”

“That’s really not necessary. You two should take it easy in your own rooms, at least at night…”

“No way, Charles Nii-sama! We’re already holding back from taking care of every little thing for you. Besides, we feel more at ease staying by your side,” Lien said, handing me a warm drink.

By the time Jade and Lien had finished their preparations, the sun had set, and it was time for dinner.

When we went to the dining room, everyone was already there. My parents looked at my attire in surprise.

“Charles, what’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?”

“Um…”

“That’s right, Mother. Charles Nii-san has been overworking himself lately and isn’t feeling well, so we’re making sure he takes a proper rest for a few days,” Jade interjected.

“We’ve been making him push himself too hard lately. Charles, take this time to recover fully,” my father said with concern.

When I reassured them that I was fine, I felt a tug on my sleeve. Looking down, I saw Armand and Sophia gazing up at me with worried expressions.

“Charles Nii-sama, are you okay?”

“Does it hurt anywhere?”

“I’m fine. I’ve just decided to rest a little. Sorry for worrying you.”

When I smiled at them, they hugged me tightly and said, “Get well soon!” Their kindness warmed my heart, even though I felt guilty since I wasn’t actually sick.

With Jade, Lien, Armand, and Sophia all taking part in ‘caring’ for me, the table became lively as I ate.

“Charles Nii-san, let’s stick to easily digestible food,” Jade suggested.

“This soup looks tasty and nutritious!” Lien added.

“Mother said fruit is good for the body, Nii-sama!” Armand chimed in.

“I’ll give you my apple, Charles Nii-sama!” Sophia offered.

Despite insisting I could feed myself, the four of them fussed over me, leaving me to eat while being doted on. Watching us, my parents smiled with relief.

After dinner, Jade suggested I take a bath. Naturally, they both came with me. Jade carefully washed my body, and Lien held me on his lap as I soaked in the tub.

When I protested, embarrassed, saying, “Please stop this,” Lien’s teary eyes and his words, “We’re just worried about you, Nii-sama,” left me unable to argue further. I let them do as they pleased.

For the next two days, I lived a pampered life… until the day came—the day of my death in the first life.

That morning, I woke up to see Jade and Lien peering at me anxiously.

“Nii-san, how are you feeling?” Jade asked.

“Anything unusual today, Charles Nii-sama?” Lien added.

“I’m fine. In fact, I feel better than usual thanks to all the care you’ve given me,” I replied with a smile, which made them both sigh in relief. They each kissed my cheek.

Today, Jade and Lien had taken the day off from work to stay with me. It seemed they couldn’t relax unless they were touching me in some way—holding my hand or pulling me close—to ensure there were no changes in my condition.

Though I had initially treated my first death like someone else’s story, as the day arrived, I couldn’t help but feel nervous.

The thought of actually dying terrified me, but even more unbearable was imagining leaving behind Jade, Lien, and my family and friends.

The idea of parting from my loved ones weighed heavily on my heart, even more so than the fear of death itself. Yet I couldn’t let Jade and Lien see my sadness, as it would only make them worry more. To steady myself, I squeezed their hands tightly.

As the long day gave way to night, the two of them laid beside me, each holding me in their arms.

“Charles Nii-san, today is almost over,” Jade said softly.

“Yeah, it is…”

“Charles Nii-sama, are you sure you’re not feeling anything strange? No chest pain or shortness of breath?” Lien asked.

“I’m fine, Lien.”

Talking with them and holding their hands, I waited as the hours ticked by.

“Charles Nii-san, you’ve been so anxious today, haven’t you? We’re watching over you closely, so please try to get some rest,” Jade said gently.

“You two haven’t slept much these past few days, have you? If anything happens, I’ll tell you right away, so please rest.”

“We’re fine, Nii-sama! We’re full of energy, so don’t worry about us,” Lien reassured me. “Just relax and rest, okay?”

*GLOSSARY:

  • Nii-san/Nii-sama/Onii-san = (Big/Elder) Brother

☝🏻I’ll be using these throughout my translation. Jade would call Charles ‘Nii-san’ while Lien would call him ‘Nii-sama’.
