“Are you sure it’s her?”
Xu Shi confirmed with Weiwei one more time.
Weiwei nodded. “It’s her. Chen Jiaying’s flowers were delivered right to her.”
Xu Shi patted Weiwei’s head. “Okay, stop crying first. I’ll go talk to her.”
Without hesitation, Xu Shi straightened her jacket, took a sip of her drink for courage, and strode over.
The matter had started late last night. Weiwei had come to Xu Shi in tears, saying Chen Jiaying was cheating and wanted to break up with her.
It took over an hour for Xu Shi to understand the ins and outs of the story Weiwei told her.
She said Chen Jiaying had been acting strange lately, always coming home smelling of perfume and being lukewarm towards her. A woman’s sixth sense had made her suspicious, so she spent several days investigating and following him, which was how she found this woman.
This woman was currently sitting by the window in a coffee shop, a laptop on her table. She was probably working. From Xu Shi’s table, she could only see the woman’s back. She was wearing a suit jacket with her legs bare, and nude high heels.
A few more steps, and Xu Shi was beside the woman.
Just as Weiwei had said, she was a very beautiful woman; she had the face and the figure.
Xu Shi stopped three steps away from her, glanced back at Weiwei, and then, in one go, pulled out the chair opposite the woman and sat down.
“Not sharing the table, not adding on WeChat.”
The person’s voice drifted over faintly.
Xu Shi scoffed internally. Quite narcissistic.
“It’s neither,” Xu Shi said.
The person across from her still didn’t look up, busy with her work. “What is it?”
“Let’s talk.”
“No time.”
After saying that, she reached out and pressed the service bell, apparently intending to have the waiter handle the situation.
Xu Shi immediately cut to the chase. “I’m Weiwei’s friend. Do you know who Weiwei is? Chen Jiaying’s girlfriend…”
As Xu Shi said this, the person across from her finally deigned to look up.
But after just a second, she lowered her head again. “Don’t know…”
Before she could finish her sentence, however, she looked up again, frowning slightly as she stared at Xu Shi.
Xu Shi swallowed nervously.
Seeing the waiter approaching, Xu Shi quickly blurted out, “It- it’s like this. Your current boyfriend, Chen Jiaying, actually has a girlfriend. I don’t know if you knew about this, but if you didn’t, now you do. I advise you to stay away from that scumbag. Chen Jiaying is two-timing you. That bastard isn’t worthy of your love.”
While Xu Shi was saying this, the woman kept staring at her, an amused expression growing on her face. She raised a hand to the table, propped up her chin, and a smile played on her lips.
Only then did Xu Shi notice that the woman was wearing a slip dress underneath; the suit jacket she had seen earlier was just casually draped over her shoulders.
Now that she had raised her hand, the jacket slid uncontrollably off her, revealing her shoulder.
A straight collarbone, slender arms- bony where she should be, fleshy where she should be. Xu Shi recalled how Weiwei had cried on the phone last night, saying she was furious, that the other woman was so beautiful, that she had lost.
Xu Shi licked her lips and finished what she was saying: “But if you did know, then you’re the other woman.”
Just as she finished, the waiter arrived, and Xu Shi prepared to be thrown out.
But in the next second, Xu Shi saw her look up at the waiter with a smile and say, “Get her a cup of coffee.”
She then asked Xu Shi, “What would you like to drink? The same as me, is that okay?”
Her voice was completely different from before, even friendly.
Xu Shi stammered, “O-okay. Thank you.”
She smiled faintly. “You’re welcome.”
After the waiter left, Xu Shi brought the focus back. “So, did you or did you not know that Chen Jiaying already had a girlfriend?”
Upon hearing this, she seemed to think for a moment, then slowly uttered two words: “Xu. Shi.”
Xu Shi was wary. “How do you know my name?”
She tilted her chin down, her gaze following. Xu Shi followed her gaze down and saw the work ID badge hanging on her chest, which had her name on it.
She said softly, “Reason Only Has a Say.”
Xu Shi didn’t hear clearly. “What?”
“Chen Jiaying, Weiwei, right?” she asked Xu Shi.
Xu Shi nodded. “Yes.”
After hearing this, she picked up her phone from the table, tapped it a few times, and dialed a number for someone named “Xiao Qing,” putting it on speaker.
Then, unhurriedly, she picked up her coffee and took a sip, undid the hair tied loosely at her back, shook her head, and rested her hand on the table, staring at the phone along with Xu Shi.
Xu Shi licked her lips again, her hands clenched on her knees.
The woman’s effortless composure made Xu Shi feel extremely intimidated. She didn’t know what was happening and could only wait and see what this person was up to.
After twelve seconds, the call was finally answered.
“Busy?” she asked.
The other side: “Busy. Can you say it in thirty seconds?”
“Yes,” she asked directly, “Is your boyfriend’s name Chen Jiaying?”
The person named Xiao Qing on the other end of the line said, “Yeah, what’s up?”
Xu Shi’s eyes slowly widened.
She then asked into the phone, “Do you know Weiwei?”
The other side replied, “Weiwei? Jiaying’s ex-girlfriend?”
She got straight to the point: “How long ago?”
The other side: “Jiaying said they broke up about a month ago. What’s wrong?”
“Ah~” She gave Xu Shi a helpless look. “It’s nothing. Go on with your work. Call me when you’re free.”
The person on the other end was probably really busy; she hung up without even saying goodbye.
Xu Shi swallowed hard, her heart pounding with embarrassment.
“Hello,” the person across from her suddenly extended her right hand. “Yu Lingshan.”
The right side of her jacket, which was barely hanging on, slid completely off with this movement, exposing her entire shoulder.
Xu Shi quickly shook her hand. “Xu Shi.”
Yu Lingshan smiled at Xu Shi, and seemed to hold her hand for a few extra seconds.
Without her prejudice, Xu Shi suddenly found this person pleasing to the eye. She now understood that Weiwei’s praises from last night were no exaggeration at all.
Alluring but not vulgar, especially her eyes. When she wasn’t smiling, they were extremely cold, but when she did, they were fatally captivating, the corners of her eyes tilting up like a fox’s.
Yu Lingshan was very efficient. She gave Xiao Qing’s number directly to Xu Shi and told her to call after six, as Xiao Qing wouldn’t answer calls from unknown numbers at this time.
She even commented on Xu Shi, “Your scolding just now wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t harsh enough.”
All the momentum Xu Shi had arrived with was gone. Because she had misunderstood the other person, she ended up thanking her and apologizing as well.
She was so incredibly stupid, rushing over in such a huff without getting the facts straight.
“I’m so sorry.” Xu Shi stood up, her expression extremely serious and earnest.
After saying this, she intended to leave, but after taking two steps to Yu Lingshan’s side, her wrist was suddenly grabbed.
“Leaving just like that?” Yu Lingshan tilted her head, looking at Xu Shi.
Xu Shi: “Is there something else?”
Yu Lingshan applied force with her arm, seemingly wanting to pull Xu Shi back into her seat, so Xu Shi went with the momentum and sat back down.
“You haven’t drunk your coffee yet.” Yu Lingshan gestured with her head towards the steaming cup.
Xu Shi said, “Ah, I won’t drink it. I’ll pay for the coffee.” She pointed at Yu Lingshan’s cup. “Yours is on me. I’m sorry, really sorry, for disturbing you.”
“Mmm~” Yu Lingshan made a sound of disagreement. “No.”
As she spoke, she closed her laptop, crossed her hands, and propped her chin on them. “You’ve already disturbed me, so keep me company for a while.” She gestured with her head towards the laptop. “You interrupted my inspiration.”
Yu Lingshan’s voice was almost a playful pout. Xu Shi’s heart inexplicably trembled, and she glanced to the side.
“Weiwei came too?” Yu Lingshan guessed.
Xu Shi nodded, her tone apologetic. “Yes.”
Yu Lingshan’s voice softened. “Don’t call her over. Just the two of us.”
Xu Shi was a bit dazed. “Huh?”
Yu Lingshan smiled. “We’ll just chat for a bit, then I’ll let you go.”
Xu Shi licked her lips, feeling very uncomfortable. “Chat about what?”
Yu Lingshan lowered her gaze to Xu Shi’s ID badge. “Ding Dong Dong, what’s that?”
Xu Shi said, “Oh,” and pointed to the logo on her badge. “It’s a new dating app our company launched, called Ding Dong Dong.”
Yu Lingshan nodded and asked again, “Did you just graduate?”
Xu Shi: “It’s been almost a year since I graduated.”
Yu Lingshan: “What’s your position at the company?”
Xu Shi had to do many things at the company. She thought for a moment and stated her main role: “Promotion.”
Yu Lingshan was puzzled. “Promotion?”
Xu Shi: “Mhm.”
Yu Lingshan paused for a moment, then asked, “Are you doing well?”
Xu Shi: “Huh?”
It was no wonder Xu Shi was confused. Yu Lingshan’s questions made it seem like they were catching up like old friends.
What kind of old friends were they?
“It’s alright, that’s life, haha.” Xu Shi gave Yu Lingshan a small laugh. “I’m really sorry to have bothered you, but my friend is getting anxious.”
Yu Lingshan said, “Alright, you can go,” and then put on a very disappointed expression.
Xu Shi gave another embarrassed smile, took out her phone, opened WeChat, and prepared to scan the QR code on the table to pay.
But just as she moved her phone towards the corner of the table, Yu Lingshan’s phone suddenly shot out. With a “beep,” Xu Shi’s phone screen recognized Yu Lingshan’s WeChat.
Yu Lingshan tilted her head and smiled at Xu Shi.
It was too beautiful a smile, utterly bewitching. Xu Shi immediately tapped “Add.”
