Act with Impunity – Chapter 24

The first time Tan Xingwei drank at Su Xu’s house was on the second night of her stay.

That time was different from this time. Back then, she had already planned for this momentous event in advance.

She had somewhat forgotten why she wanted to drink, probably because she was finally an adult and her family no longer restricted such things, so she could give it a try. Thus, during dinner, she proposed the idea of drinking to Su Xu.

At that time, Su Xu immediately asked, “Do you know how to drink?”

Tan Xingwei quickly shook her head. “No, no, I’ve never had alcohol before. I just want to try it.”

Su Xu ah’d and started to laugh. “Your first time drinking, huh.”

Tan Xingwei was a little timid. “Yes,” she asked Su Xu, “is it okay?”

Su Xu nodded. “Of course,” she thought for a moment. “I have some fruit wine in the fridge, the alcohol content isn’t high.” She directly made the decision for Tan Xingwei. “You can drink this.”

Tan Xingwei: “Okay, okay.”

What Su Xu gave her then was the peach-flavored bottle. When she handed it over, Su Xu had said, “There’s more if it’s not enough,” but the outcome was that Tan Xingwei, not knowing her limits, downed the whole bottle and immediately passed out.

After she became dizzy, she grew much more talkative. One moment she was telling Su Xu about her life in her third year of high school, the next she was talking about things from her childhood with Tan Yinqing. Su Xu stayed by her side, listening to her, responding to her words, and promising her, “Okay, I won’t tell Yinqing, you can rest assured.”

At that time, being drunk, all she thought was how happy she was; if she drank more, Su Xu would stay by her side.

Unlike now.

Now, she had really gotten bold. What have you done!

As Tan Xingwei brushed her teeth, she looked at herself in the mirror and took a deep breath.

What! Have! You! Done!

She closed her eyes, not wanting to face herself, but as soon as she did, the images flooded her mind.

The sofa, the kiss, the soft lips.

Even knowing she had caused big trouble, Tan Xingwei found it hard to hide her smile. Sure enough, when she opened her eyes, she saw herself in the mirror, smiling with her lips pressed together.

Tan Xingwei was completely sober now. She started to recall what happened after she kissed her, and what she was thinking before the kiss.

What was she thinking? All she could remember was Su Xu staring only at her eyes.

And after the kiss? Tan Xingwei’s mind was a mess, and she was so flustered she had no interest in watching the movie, and then had the sudden thought of washing up.

So Su Xu gave her pajamas, a bath towel, and toiletries, and then settled her in here.

In short, she had fled.

The things Su Xu prepared for her were very complete, enough for Tan Xingwei to stay alone in the bathroom for nearly an hour.

When she came out, she was already wearing Su Xu’s pajamas and was ready to start her act.

In the living room, the movie was paused at the moment before Tan Xingwei went to the bathroom. The screen was frozen on the scene where the older sister and younger sister reunite and drink together. On the sofa, Su Xu was still leaning back, holding her phone.

Probably hearing the noise from Tan Xingwei’s direction, Su Xu looked up.

The moment their eyes met, Tan Xingwei tilted her body and leaned against the wall. “Big Sister Ah Xu, I’m still a little dizzy.”

Su Xu put down her phone. “I told you not to be in such a hurry to take a shower.”

As she spoke, she walked over to Tan Xingwei’s side.

Tan Xingwei put on a convincing act, furrowing her brow and closing her eyes, taking deep breaths in and out.

When she opened her eyes, Su Xu was looking at her with a smile, her eyes crinkling. The smile almost made Tan Xingwei break character.

“Feeling that bad, huh.” Su Xu cupped Tan Xingwei’s cheek with one hand and caressed it with her thumb, comforting her.

Tan Xingwei: “Mmm~”

Su Xu lowered her hand. “Go lie down in the room.”

Not having had enough of her act, Tan Xingwei continued to lean. “Mmm~”

Su Xu: “Go now?”

Tan Xingwei: “Mmm~”

Su Xu: “Should I carry you?”

This was a bit too much. Although Tan Xingwei really wanted Su Xu to carry her, on the surface, she maintained her pained expression to keep the act going. “No need, let’s go.”

Su Xu helped Tan Xingwei to the bed, tucked her in, poured her a glass of water, and said, “If you’re sleepy, just go to sleep. I’m going to take a shower,” before leaving.

The moment the door closed, Tan Xingwei’s eyes popped wide open, full of energy.

While showering, she had been afraid that Su Xu would be angry because of her actions, but after her little act, she found that Su Xu was still very concerned about her, and she started to feel secretly pleased again.

But why did Su Xu look as if nothing had happened?

This had happened so suddenly that Tan Xingwei really didn’t know what to do next, so she decided to find someone to talk to.

Who to find? After thinking it over, she opened QQ and clicked on a chat.

This person, named Yezi, was one of Tan Xingwei’s online friends. In her sophomore year, Tan Xingwei had become a fan of an obscure ship from a variety show and joined a shipping group. That’s where she met Yezi.

And why did she think of Yezi now? Because the person Su Xu had just asked about who she watched “Meteor” with was this very Yezi.

At that time, it wasn’t just Yezi, but also others from the shipping group. Someone had said that the personalities of the sisters in “Meteor” were very similar to the ship they were all fans of, so as a kind of group activity, they had arranged a time to watch it online together.

This Yezi had a very rich and exciting love life. Tan Xingwei had already heard her talk about four different girlfriends.

In the past, Tan Xingwei would stay up late at night to keep Yezi company and relieve her boredom. Now, Yezi, your chance to repay the favor has come.

She sent a poke first: “hello”

Not bad, Yezi was online: “hi”

Tan Xingwei: “I need some advice”

Yezi: “Go ahead”

Tan Xingwei: “Do you remember I have an older sister I like?”

Yezi: “Oho!”

Yezi: “I remember”

Yezi: “How did it go”

Tan Xingwei: “I just kissed her”

Yezi: “?”

Yezi: “???”

Yezi: “Wait, isn’t there any backstory?”

Yezi: “Why do I remember you saying she’s straight?”

Tan Xingwei: “According to the latest reports, she’s gay.”

Yezi: “?”

Yezi: “Then does she know you’re gay?”

Tan Xingwei: “She doesn’t know”

Yezi: “?”

Yezi: “Then, in what capacity did you kiss her?”

Tan Xingwei: “Good question. No capacity. LOL”

Tan Xingwei: “What do I do now?”

Yezi: “What’s the situation between you two now?”

Tan Xingwei: “I’m in her bed.”

Yezi: “?”

I’m sorry, but Tan Xingwei wanted to laugh at every one of Yezi’s question marks.

Yezi: “You two, you didn’t…?”

Tan Xingwei: “We didn’t.”

Yezi: “Oh, then, uh…”

Yezi: “Why don’t you confess your sexual orientation first?”

Tan Xingwei: “True.”

Yezi: “Well if she’s gay then it’s easy, super easy.”

Yezi: “Just go for it.”

Tan Xingwei: “What if she doesn’t like me?”

Yezi: “Hey now, let’s not get discouraged before we even start.”

Yezi: “Be open and confident!”

Yezi: “No regrets.”

Tan Xingwei: “Okay!”

At that moment, Tan Xingwei felt as if she’d been injected with chicken blood, full of fighting spirit.

But morale is a fleeting thing; it wanes and then disappears. With the passage of time, it’s easy to become hesitant and overthink.

So when Su Xu returned to the room, Tan Xingwei was pretending to be asleep.

However, she was indeed a little sleepy. The dizziness from the alcohol wasn’t fake, and it was also true that it was now bedtime.

She peeked with her eyes slightly open, closing them when Su Xu faced her, and opening them again when Su Xu’s side or back was turned to her.

Opening and closing, feigning and being genuine, until Su Xu turned off the light and lay down beside Tan Xingwei.

Wow, Big Sister smells so good.

Su Xu’s scent made Tan Xingwei dizzier than the alcohol had.

Tan Xingwei kept her eyes closed, but she could feel everything Su Xu did. Su Xu moved very gently, lifting the covers, slipping her body in, and then slowly pulling the covers back up.

The world was silent.

When they were sitting on the sofa, they were closer. Now in bed, Tan Xingwei was afraid she’d have to stretch out an arm just to touch Su Xu.

Just as Tan Xingwei was feeling a little disappointed by this, Su Xu suddenly turned over.

Perfectly, closing the distance to only half a person’s width, Su Xu was facing Tan Xingwei.

“You’re not asleep,” Su Xu said.

Caught red-handed, Tan Xingwei’s eyes were wide, unable to pretend any longer.

Tan Xingwei’s heart pounded, and she could only manage, “Mmm.”

Su Xu asked, “Can’t sleep? What are you thinking about?”

Tan Xingwei: “You smell so good.”

Tan Xingwei: “…”

What on earth was she saying.

“No, not thinking about anything,” Tan Xingwei gathered herself. “That movie, are you going to watch the rest of it later?”

Su Xu made a soft sound of contemplation, then she said, “Actually, I’ve seen it.”

Tan Xingwei was stunned. “Huh? You’ve seen it?”

Su Xu: “I have.”

Tan Xingwei was confused. “Then why did you say you hadn’t?”

Su Xu’s voice lowered. “I wanted to watch it again with you.”

Tan Xingwei’s brain crashed again. Her plan to use the movie to lead into her next topic had failed once more.

Such chaotic moves, how was she supposed to counter them?

“You’re not angry, are you?” Su Xu spoke again.

As she said this, her hand was cupped under her cheek, and her voice was soft.

As if she were being coquettish.

Tan Xingwei lay flat on her back, her hands on her stomach, feeling her heart beat heavy and fast.

“I’m not,” Tan Xingwei also softened. “I’m not.”

“Good~” Su Xu laughed lightly. “Then let’s sleep. We can watch the movie another time.”

Tan Xingwei, coaxed into an even dizzier state, closed her eyes immediately. “Okay.”

But since the movie was mentioned, it’s worth saying something about the second half.

There’s a bed scene, yes, there is.

The kind of bed scene worthy of being completely cut, and also the second famous scene of the movie, which happens on the very night the sisters drink together.

It’s also worth mentioning that the movie has an open ending; no one knows if they ended up together in the end.

“Are you able to sleep?” After a moment, a whisper came from Su Xu’s side.

Tan Xingwei also whispered back to her, “I think so.”

Maybe.

Su Xu suddenly used her full nickname: “Tan Xingxing.”

Tan Xingwei opened her eyes. “Hmm?”

Su Xu: “Close your eyes.”

So Tan Xingwei closed her eyes again. “Hmm?”

Su Xu smiled.

With her sight cut off, her other senses were amplified. Tan Xingwei felt something gently tapping on her chin.

It was Su Xu’s finger, as if teasing a small cat, tap by tap.

A few seconds later, Tan Xingwei knew what Su Xu was doing with this action. Sleepiness washed over her, and her mind began to get muddled.

Su Xu was lulling Tan Xingwei to sleep.

It was very effective. Tan Xingwei thought she would have trouble falling asleep tonight, but unexpectedly, she was out in less than two minutes.

In the blink of an eye, it was morning.

She was woken up by her alarm clock, and it took a moment of grogginess before she remembered where she was.

Su Xu’s side of the bed was already empty. Tan Xingwei turned off the alarm and sat up.

Within a few seconds of waking up, the bedroom door opened, and Su Xu came in from outside, saying to her, “You’re awake.”

Tan Xingwei: “Mmm.”

Su Xu: “Then go wash up and come out.”

Su Xu left again.

Because the first person she saw in the morning was Su Xu, even though it was Monday, it didn’t seem so unpleasant.

Su Xu had woken up a little earlier than Tan Xingwei to prepare breakfast. By the time Tan Xingwei had gotten ready and came out of the room, Su Xu had already packed sandwiches and milk.

“It’s warm milk. Eat it in the car, otherwise it’ll get cold and you won’t drink it,” Su Xu handed both bags to Tan Xingwei. “Let’s go, I’ll take you to your company.”

Tan Xingwei’s brain hadn’t booted up yet, so she just did whatever Su Xu said. The first thing she did after getting in the car was to eat her breakfast.

Su Xu’s house was only a ten-minute drive from her company, and Tan Xingwei’s breakfast took eight of those minutes.

After eating her fill, she felt a bit more energetic, and then she remembered the task Yezi had given her last night.

“Big Sister Ah Xu,” Tan Xingwei said, “when are we going to watch ‘Meteor’ again?”

Yes, she really had no other tricks up her sleeve; apart from “Meteor,” it was still “Meteor.”

The question was rather abrupt, especially so early in the morning. Su Xu paused for a moment, then smiled. “Anytime. Just come to my place when you want to watch it.”

Tan Xingwei felt this wasn’t going in the right direction.

But before Tan Xingwei could figure out how to broach the subject, Su Xu spoke again, asking, “Since you’ve seen it, you should know what happens in the rest of the plot, right?”

Tan Xingwei: “I do.”

“Which friend did you watch it with?” Su Xu asked.

This was the second time Su Xu had asked. Tan Xingwei thought Su Xu must really want to know, and just as she was thinking about where to start the story, Su Xu spoke again.

“Was it an ex-girlfriend?” Su Xu asked.

Tan Xingwei was alarmed. “No, no, it was online friends, a lot of people.” Forgetting about where to start, she just blurted out whatever came to mind. “It wasn’t really watching together. We each watched on our own; we just set a time, started it together, and discussed it in the group chat.”

Su Xu ah’d. “Can I drive in?”

Tan Xingwei turned her head to look. “Yes, you can park at the entrance.”

Yes, they had arrived.

Work waits for no one, so Tan Xingwei didn’t want to delay Su Xu. She said her thanks and goodbyes and got out of the car.

Watching Su Xu’s car leave, Tan Xingwei felt that something was not quite right.

Not right, very not right!

This feeling followed her as she entered the building, took the elevator, clocked in, and went into the office.

Sitting down at her desk, the first thing Tan Xingwei did was open her phone and tap on Su Xu’s WeChat.

Tan Xingwei: “Big Sister Ah Xu, do you know something?”

Tan Xingwei had looked up Su Xu’s company; it was also about a ten-minute drive from her own.

Ten minutes, ten minutes.

Tan Xingwei nervously kept tapping her screen. Her colleagues were now clocking in and coming in one after another.

Eleven minutes later, just as Tan Xingwei logged into WeChat on her computer, a message from Su Xu popped up.

Su Xu: “Are you referring to?”

Tan Xingwei was direct: “My sexual orientation”

Tan Xingwei forcefully pressed the “enter” key to send, then clasped her hands together to wait for Su Xu’s message.

The first ding. Su Xu said: “Actually, it’s a bit obvious”

Tan Xingwei took a soft breath.

The second ding. Su Xu said: “But I wasn’t too sure”

Tan Xingwei sat up straight.

The third ding. Su Xu: “Are you?”

Tan Xingwei was so excited she almost jumped up. She quickly replied: “I am, I am”

After sending it, Tan Xingwei grabbed the cup on her desk, only to realize there was no water in it.

She put it down again.

The fourth ding.

Su Xu said: “That’s good then”
