“Charles Nii-san, are you hiding anything from us? If there’s anything weighing on you, please tell us.”

“You always try too hard to be strong, Nii-sama. So don’t keep secrets from us!”

Seeing how protective they were becoming, I reflected on my actions. After confessing even about the events of my first life, I didn’t think there was anything left to hide.

“Actually… before leaving the estate, I saw Uncle Lyle in Einther.”

The moment I mentioned our uncle’s name, their demeanor changed. The strange atmosphere made me hesitate to continue.

“Nii-san, please finish your story.”

Although Jade’s smile was still present, it had a chilling edge. Swallowing hard, I nodded and continued.

I told them about how Uncle Lyle had begged for help and how I had turned him away. I admitted to regretting it, even if just a little.

By the time I finished, both Jade and Lien were angrier than I’d ever seen them.

“That’s unforgivable! You have nothing to regret, Nii-sama!”

“But… turning Uncle away doesn’t feel right either. And I’m scared that it might cause trouble for others around us.”

“I think you made the right decision, Nii-san. But for Uncle to hurt you not just once, but even in this life… I should’ve taken care of him myself!”

Jade muttered darkly, his expression grim. Unable to catch all of his words, I tilted my head in confusion. Lien quickly stepped in to break the tension.

“Charles Nii-sama! Don’t worry about what Jade said! By the way, do you actually want to help Uncle?”

When he asked that, I couldn’t answer.

“I… I don’t know. I just can’t bring myself to fully hate him. And that’s why I keep getting tricked.”

I let out a dry laugh, but Lien hugged me again.

“You’re not at fault, Charles Nii-sama. Uncle is the one in the wrong.”

“Exactly, Nii-san. He’s a man who’s betrayed others just to fund his vices.”

Their kindness touched me so deeply I almost cried again. But this time, I held it back.

After that, we returned to the estate as quickly as possible, switching carriages along the way.

Familiar, nostalgic scenery spread out before us.

When we arrived at the manor, my worried-looking parents greeted us. Tears welled up again as I embraced them, apologizing for causing them concern. Like a small child, I cried, and my parents gently held me.

Surrounded by their kindness, I realized just how much I was loved by everyone.

The day after returning to the manor.

The three of us set out for the eastern village of Einther, where my uncle had been.

I felt a twinge of fear imagining the words my uncle might throw at me when we met.

But now, Jade and Lien were by my side.

When we arrived in the village and visited the village elder’s house, the elder and Matt greeted us with surprised expressions.

“Sir Charles. What brings you here?”

“Sorry for the sudden visit. Um, has a man named Lyle been staying in this village?”

At the mention of my uncle’s name, the elder and Matt exchanged glances, their expressions turning apologetic.

“Um… Sir Charles. That man left the village two weeks ago.”

“He left? Did he say where he was going?”

“I didn’t hear where… I’m sorry.”

Hearing that my uncle wasn’t there anymore made the tension I’d been holding in suddenly ease.

―――If he’s not here, then it can’t be helped.

Part of me felt I needed to see my uncle, but another part didn’t want to.

I didn’t want to know my uncle’s true feelings. I didn’t want him to hurl hatred at me. And I didn’t want to hate him any more than I already did.

When I told the apologetic Matt, “Don’t worry about it,” his face lit up.

“Ah, um, Sir Charles… actually, I have a message from Lyle. He said, ‘I’m sorry for all the trouble I’ve caused. Please don’t worry about me anymore and live happily.’”

I blinked in surprise.

I couldn’t believe my uncle would say such words. But Matt, who didn’t know the details of my relationship with my uncle, had no reason to lie.

Did my uncle finally change his ways at the very end?

“Matt, thank you for telling me.”

When I smiled at him, Matt looked visibly relieved.

After chatting with the elder, we left the village.

As we were leaving, Jade said he had some business with Matt regarding the trading company and turned back.

“Nii-sama, let’s head back to the carriage.”

“Yeah, let’s do that.”

Once back in the carriage, I let out a long sigh.

Seeing me like that, Lien looked worried and took my hand.

“You must be disappointed Uncle Lyle wasn’t there.”

“Well, it can’t be helped.”

“Do you still want to look for him? If you do, we’ll help you.”

“…No, if Uncle said that, then it’s fine now.”

When I told Lien that, he gently patted my head.

“Nii-sama, you’ve worked so hard for so long… Let’s be happy together from now on.”

“Is it really okay? For someone like me to be happy…?”

“Of course it’s okay! You’ve been struggling all alone for so long, Charles Nii-sama. From now on, we’ll always be by your side, making sure you truly feel happy.”

“Lien…”

Seeing Lien’s smile, I couldn’t help but smile too.

After a while, Jade returned to the carriage, and the three of us made our way back to the manor.

And just like that, I was unexpectedly freed from the burden of feeling guilty towards my uncle.

Afterward, my uncle never appeared before me again.

Occasionally, I would wonder how he was doing. But amidst the happy days I spent with my family, his presence gradually faded from my thoughts.

*Translator’s Note: Heh. You really think Uncle Lyle will just up and left like that? You guys really believe that? 😏 -K

*GLOSSARY:

  • Nii-san/Nii-sama/Onii-san = (Big/Elder) Brother

☝🏻I’ll be using these throughout my translation. Jade would call Charles ‘Nii-san’ while Lien would call him ‘Nii-sama’.
