“Director!”
Kim Chulwoo urgently called out to Director Yeon. Five minutes was more than enough time to kill someone. He couldn’t know whether he should try to stop the superior, or if it would be better to simply stay out of it.
They had mobilized alphas from Jiwoo, who had been on standby in front of the police station, to block all the reporters trying to follow them. But even so, there were bound to be a few slippery ones who had managed to slip through the net like eels. In a situation where all the public’s attention was fixated squarely on Director Yeon, if he were to actually end up killing someone, it would be disastrous.
Completely ignoring his secretary’s urgent cry, the man reached for the slumped body on the floor in just a few steps.
“Chairman Jung…”
He didn’t even remember the moment he saw the vile pheromones leaking from the room or the old man’s flailing legs. All that remained in Director Yeon’s memory was the sensation of grabbing the back of the old man’s skull and slamming it down hard into the floor. It must have hit the expensive marble with quite a force, the white hair was now soaked with blood.
The man who had trembled uncontrollably at the sight of blood lightly staining Jung Heeyeon’s lips now wore an emotionless expression as he stepped right into the shallow pool of blood.
Squelch—.
Dragging his foot across the floor, a red bloodied trail was drawn over the white marble.
“You, bastard… how did you…”
“You should’ve known better who you were messing with…”
As if the old alpha’s voice didn’t even reach him, Director Yeon muttered to himself and slowly knelt on one knee.
“Gah—! Urgh!”
A large hand wrapped around Chairman Jung’s throat without the slightest hesitation. Smooth skin and bulging veins stood in stark contrast to the old man’s wrinkled hands.
“What, it seemed like you were trying to damage my baby’s pheromone glands?”
“Khrrk—! Ugh, cough—!”
“Why? Did you think if his pheromone glands got wrecked and he couldn’t get pregnant anymore, I’d throw him away?”
His voice was disturbingly calm for someone strangling another person’s neck.
“You’re the one who raised me like a fighting dog, Chairman Jung. But I guess your age is really catching up to you… You’ve forgotten, haven’t you?”
Only once the old man’s face began turning blue did Director Yeon finally ease his grip on that neck. Chairman Jung hurriedly turned over and broke into a violent coughing fit.
“Cough—! Urgh—! Cough!”
Watching his superior’s actions, Kim Chulwoo’s face hardened. It wasn’t hard for him to realize that Director Yeon was toying with his prey.
“Don’t you know I never let go once I bite?”
Wham!
The coughing face was slammed once more into the marble floor.
“And you think I’m crazy enough…”
Wham!
Kim Chulwoo seriously began to consider whether he should stop Director Yeon. No matter how resilient alphas were, slamming one’s head into marble that many times could definitely be fatal.
“To impregnate the baby…”
Wham!
At this rate, Director Yeon truly looked ready to snap. The pool of blood spreading across the marble floor was getting bigger.
“Doing this is still not calming my anger…”
Director Yeon mercilessly yanked up the graying hair clenched in his fist. Thankfully, the chairman wasn’t dead yet. Strange choking sounds rattled through the old man’s throat as blood-foamed spit oozed from between his lips.
Kim Chulwoo swallowed dryly as he watched the man’s rare fury. Even if he might take a hit himself, he had to at least stop this from becoming murder. Just as he gathered himself and tried to take a single step toward Director Yeon, who looked utterly blind to everything around him—
“Director!”
Kim Jiwon burst into the room, gasping for breath. They didn’t even realize the doctor had arrived.
“Hurry, come here now!”
At the doctor’s short command, Director Yeon let go and stood up without hesitation, as if he had no lingering regret.
“Make sure that thing stays alive.”
“Yes, sir.”
At his cue, Kim Chulwoo gave a nod at the alphas behind him, signaling them to look after Chairman Jung.
“He’s on the verge of pheromone shock, so he needs your pheromones, Director. Haaa… if I’d known this would happen, I should have explained more thoroughly in advance.”
Striding out in long steps, Director Yeon went straight to the couch and gently picked up the body lying there.
“Still, it’s good that you didn’t recklessly release your pheromones earlier. Thankfully, you’re a dominant alpha, and Heeyeon-ssi has been exposed to your pheromones for a long time.”
Once they stepped outside, the driver waiting by the car opened the door. The car took off as soon as Director Yeon closed it. Kim Jiwon, who had quickly gotten into the front seat, turned around and spoke.
“Right now, the priority is to stabilize Heeyeon-ssi’s pheromones. He tends to feel safe with your pheromones, so if you release them now, it should help.”
Director Yeon pulled Jung Heeyeon even closer into his arms, steadily increasing the amount of pheromones he was releasing. It had already been a while since his emotional turmoil had stripped him of control over his pheromones, but while reining them in was the problem, unleashing them wasn’t.
His palm was stained with blood from laying hands on Chairman Jeong. The thought of touching Jung Heeyeon with that bloodied hand didn’t sit well with him. Even so, Director Yeon carefully cradled the rounded back of the omega’s head and gently pulled it toward his shoulder.
It was a motion as cautious and tender as holding a child.
“We won’t know for sure until we run a full diagnostic, but from what I can tell, he’s still alright. I tested him with a rapid kit as soon as I arrived, and it wasn’t at a dangerous threshold. Still, keep flooding him with pheromones until we get to the hospital.”
“Okay.”
Only then did Director Yeon finally become aware of the fact that he had been breathing. It wasn’t until he saw Jung Heeyeon’s eyelids gently closed in calm, and the rhythm of his breathing becoming steadier compared to before, that the realization truly sank in.
“Haaa…”
A sigh escaped him—closer to a breathless laugh than anything else. If they had been even a little later, the consequences might have been irreversible. It was a stroke of luck that they had managed to reach Shim Soocheon so quickly.
He’d heard the crash had struck only the passenger side. Since it had clearly been a targeted attempt on Director Yeon, they must have accounted for the fact that he never sat in the passenger seat. After regaining consciousness with the help of a passerby, Shim Soocheon had immediately contacted Kim Chulwoo.
It was the exact moment Director Yeon had stepped out of the police station. As soon as he heard the news, he didn’t hesitate to begin location tracking. Thankfully, due to his lover who had faithfully worn the tracker as he was told, pinpointing the location had been relatively easy. Once Director Yeon confirmed Jung Heeyeon’s location, he immediately set out. Evading the reporters who tried to tail him was a task he left to the alphas from Jiwoo.
From that point, the memories became a blur.
Belatedly overwhelmed by a wave of relief, Director Yeon buried his nose against the pale nape of Jung Heeyeon’s neck and took a deep breath. A string of curses had threatened to escape from the back of his throat, but he clenched his jaw tightly, barely holding them back.
He didn’t know how long the car had been running, but he could feel strength slowly returning to the limp body in his arms.
“Direc… tor….”
The omega, with his face resting against the man’s shoulder, slowly lifted his head.
His voice was so faint it felt more like a whisper of breath than actual sound.
“Heeyeon.”
Director Yeon didn’t know how his voice sounded to Jung Heeyeon. He wanted to respond as gently as he usually did, with softness. But whatever calmness he could feign had long since been burned away.
“I’m… sorry I was late.”
Jung Heeyeon blinked slowly. He could hear his own ragged breathing in his ears. He was gasping, as though he had just finished running a great distance, but the trembling in his body began to calm, soothed by the pheromones radiating from the man holding him. It wasn’t the suffocating, foul stench that had choked him earlier. This was something else entirely—familiar, warm, and comforting. The scent that always made him feel safe.
“Director…”
Even as he gasped for air, Jung Heeyeon continued to speak slowly. Every word burned painfully in his throat, as if it was swollen inside. Still, there was something he had to say to Director Yeon.
