It seemed they’d be staying the night after all.

They took a taxi, travelling along the dark coast of the Sea of Japan to their inn.

The inn was traditional, with rooms overlooking the sea. Sitting in the wicker chairs by the window, looking out, Kagura noticed Zero bringing over a cup of green tea, freshly poured. The mild sweetness spread through Kagura’s mouth, soothing the chill inside.

“The Sea of Japan has its own unique feel,” Zero murmured, sitting down in the wicker chair across from him, looking out.

“Winter is just around the corner.”

Kagura chuckled at the memory.

“Haruka-nee kept going on and on during our family trip to the Noto Peninsula about how the Sea of Japan in winter looked grey, rough, and frightening.”

“There’s definitely something there that triggers a survival instinct,” Zero replied.

Indeed, fear is a feeling rooted in the instinct for self-preservation.

Zero continued, his left lip curling slightly.

“If you stop feeling fear, it’s over.”

It meant that an essential function for survival had broken.

Kagura suddenly thought of Renjou’s fearless fighting style.

“Renjou seems to have lost the ability to be afraid.”

“…Or, maybe he’s actually incredibly afraid,” Zero suggested, sipping his green tea with a softened expression.

“Well, either way, it’s clear something’s broken.”

Dinner was served in the room. As they savoured the rich, fatty teriyaki of cold-season yellowtail and a whole snow crab, the melancholy mood gradually lifted.

After the meal, they soaked in the private open-air bath attached to the room.

With a sake cup floating in a tub, Kagura took a sip, gazing at the rough waves on the night sea, their crests illuminated by the moonlight.

He noticed Zero’s gaze on him, a slightly tipsy look in his eyes.

“It feels just like an ordinary trip.”

As he spoke with a slight laugh, Zero drifted to his right, as if carried by the water, and their bare upper arms touched.

“It’s a luxury.”

“You mean the trip?”

“No, spending idle time with you, Jinya.”

“…”

Spending idle time with Zero—something that their relationship didn’t strictly require—was indeed a luxury.

Instead of voicing agreement, Kagura shifted his weight slightly onto the spot where their arms touched.

Then, he felt a tremble pass through Zero’s arm.

“What’s this? So cute,” Zero said with a smile.

Kagura shot a sidelong glare at Zero, who was still laughing, and pulled away.

“I’m just cold.”

“Sure, sure, cold.”

Still chuckling, Zero wrapped an arm around his shoulders, pulled him close, and looked into his face. He then pressed their lips together. Zero’s tongue briefly slipped inside, tasting him, brushing along his inner mouth.

“Inside, it’s plenty warm.”

Zero’s eyes gleamed with a bluish tint in the whites, reminiscent of a nocturnal predator.

With one hand holding Kagura’s shoulder, Zero let the other slide along his inner thigh. Annoyed at the thought of Zero feeling he was in control, Kagura deliberately parted his legs in the water.

The sound of Zero’s groans, a mix of pleasure and strain, echoed in Kagura’s mind.

Fully seated on Zero’s lap, Kagura rested his chin on Zero’s broad shoulder.

The stars in the sky seemed to tremble slightly, probably from the shared quivers of their bodies.

“This… is too much. I’m going to lose it.”

To try to disperse the overwhelming sensation he didn’t know how to handle, Kagura bit down firmly on Zero’s ear.
