The members of Enwu referred to themselves as ‘Non-citizens’, distinguishing themselves from ‘Citizens’ with proper registration. When they spoke of themselves as ‘Non-citizens’, they even sounded a bit proud. How did these ‘Non-citizens’ see the ‘Citizens’, sheltered within the boundaries of society? It was something Kagura, as a ‘Citizen’ himself, couldn’t imagine.
If he couldn’t imagine it, his only option was to get closer to the boundary.
―――He wanted to understand the world Zero inhabited.
That desire grew each time he met him.
When their car entered the underground parking lot of a building in Roppongi, Zero handed Kagura a fox mask that covered the upper half of his face, decorated in black and blue paint.
“Once we’re inside, don’t take this off under any circumstances.”
As he accepted the mask, Kagura confirmed something with a stern expression.
“This is the ‘Invincible Castle,’ right?”
“Yeah, that’s right. You at least know what kind of place this is?”
“More or less.”
Kagura’s cheeks tightened slightly with tension.
The ‘Invincible Castle’.
It was a multi-purpose building in Roppongi that only those with an invitation card could enter. It was said to host everything from underground casinos to the arrangement of celebrity escorts and a wide range of other illicit businesses.
The police couldn’t intervene in matters inside this building, partly because some senior police officers were regular patrons.
Additionally, selling information about activities within the building was strictly prohibited. Anyone who did so would find themselves targeted by both state powers and criminal organisations, ensuring they’d be erased without a trace.
The owner was a foreigner, and while both the yakuza and loosely organised criminals made profits here, any conflicts within the building were strictly forbidden. Violating this rule meant you would never leave the building.
It truly was an ‘Invincible Castle’.
However, even the information Kagura had was mostly hearsay, and today was his first time stepping foot inside this building. The entire structure was like a massive VIP room, and only a limited circle of people could even obtain an invitation card.
When Kagura put on his fox mask, Zero also donned a black Zorro mask that concealed the upper half of his face.
Zero then fastened a black smartwatch-like device onto Kagura’s right wrist and another one onto his own.
“This device contains the invitation card info. Yours is B-rank, mine’s SS-rank. The higher the rank, the more areas you can access. Today, B-rank will be enough.”
“Is SS-rank the highest?”
“Yeah. Beyond that, there’s only the owner’s card.”
Before they got out of the car, Zero reminded him once more.
“No matter what happens, don’t get into any trouble. Just close your eyes if you have to, okay?”
“I get it.”
But would he really be able to keep calm if some heinous crime were happening right in front of him? He furrowed his brow beneath the fox mask, and as if sensing his expression, Zero tapped the device on Kagura’s right wrist.
“I won’t show you things you don’t need to see.”
At least the B-rank area likely wasn’t too deep into the underworld.
Zero’s thick lips curved into a smirk.
“You don’t have much self-control, always ready to bite at anything.”
As Kagura opened his mouth to retort, Zero got out of the car before he could be snapped at, and then he told the driver, Kataware, “Pick us up in three hours.” After Kagura got out, the van pulled out of the parking lot.
There were only a few cars in the parking area.
After all, not many people would want to leave their licence plate exposed here.
They took the escalator from the underground parking to the first floor. The entrance hall was lined with black marble on both the walls and ceiling, and an oriental pattern was etched into the black floor.
They moved to the back left side of the space, not even knowing where the door might be. In front of a dead-end wall, Zero instructed, “Place your right wrist here.” The two of them held their wrist devices up to the wall.
“A purple card and a green card have been authenticated,” announced a feminine-sounding mechanical voice.
With that, a section of the wall receded and slid sideways.
A large, cylindrical lounge appeared. In the centre of the black floor, a massive blue mandala glowed under black light. Around forty to fifty men and women were visible at a glance.
Each person wore a mask covering most of their face. The Zorro mask that Zero wore seemed to be a standard type, as several people wore the same style. There was no dress code; attire was varied. Some, like Kagura, wore suits, while others, like Zero, were in leather jackets. Female guests ranged from office attire to cocktail dresses and even kimonos. There was even a man in sweatpants and sandals, but on his left wrist, he wore a Richard Mille watch worth no less than one hundred million yen.
The walls had five elevators, each door painted a different colour: purple, red, blue, green, and grey.
“These elevators are colour-coded by rank?” Kagura asked.
“Yeah, from SS down to C. You can only use elevators up to your own colour level or lower,” Zero explained, just as a beeping sound echoed. Black-suited men in white, featureless full-face masks rushed over and dragged a man out of the red elevator.
“Rank is tracked by sensors all over the place. If you break the rules, that’s what happens. Invitation cards work on a deduction system; points are subtracted each time you break the rules. When your points hit zero, the card is invalidated.”
“So these devices monitor and identify each person?”
“Exactly.”
Invitation cards became harder to obtain the higher the rank, and even C-rank cards were difficult to acquire. It was an efficient way to filter out problematic guests while maintaining anonymity.
With Zero’s guidance, Kagura stepped into the green elevator. The interior was also green, and the button panel displayed B2, 1, 3, 4, 5, and 9. B1 was the underground parking level, but it couldn’t be accessed directly. Although this building had thirteen floors and three basement levels, B-rank only permitted access to a limited selection of floors.
Zero pressed the B2 button.
It felt like they descended far deeper than a typical second basement level, based on the sensation and duration. Finally, the doors opened, and a roar of cheers and the sound of stomping feet surged toward them.
They followed Zero out of the elevator and passed through a gate. Kagura’s wrist device blinked as they went through, confirming their entry.
Beyond the gate, an impressively high-ceilinged space opened up.
A ring of red leather seating surrounded the area, facing toward the centre, where an octagonal cage with wire mesh walls was set up.
―――An underground fighting arena…
Hundreds of spectators filled the space, some surrounding the ring, others seated in the tiers of stairs. Screaming fans, likely those who had bet large sums on the ongoing match, were engrossed in the fight.
Three drones hovered above the ring, apparently recording the action.
Inside the cage, two men were moving clockwise, keeping a careful distance from each other. Zero pointed at them.
“They’re ranked second and third.”
Both men were well-built with muscular physiques. The second-ranked fighter wore a black tank top, military pants, and boots, while the third-ranked one, covered in tattoos reminiscent of ancient designs, was bare-chested, wearing black long boxing shorts and wrestling shoes. Both men wore wrestling masks, hiding their faces.
Kagura stared at the tattooed man, feeling a sense of familiarity in his physique.

*Translator’s Note: Guess who ranked first in the arena? Hehe. By the way, I hate to say this, but… you guys do know that this sort of place actually exists in real life, right? I like this novel because it sort of kind of exposed the reality of the world for a bit. And for the love of God, I hope I’ll never have to deal with anything that has to do with a place like that in real life. No thanks. -K
*P/S: I have completed the translation to this novel (Chapter 38 is the final chapter). All chapters had been scheduled daily until early November. I will publish the 1st chapter to volume 3 as well, but the chapters for that will be scheduled to be published after the last chapter of this volume. Have fun reading! -K
