“We should avoid using the Owner-only elevator. Instead, we’ll access the third basement and thirteenth floor via the stairs from the second basement and twelfth floor. I can tamper with the security system for about 30 minutes.”

While reassured by the Enwu team’s coordinated efforts to capture Toono, Kagura recalled a lingering concern. Leaning toward Zero, he whispered,

“Have you made any progress identifying the mole?”

Zero, who had been wearing himself thin trying to expose the Eastern Alliance’s informant within Enwu, grimaced slightly at the question.

“I haven’t pinpointed the mole yet. That’s why I’m only involving this group of people I can trust completely,” Zero said.

“Just four of you?”

Riki pointed at Kagura. “Five, counting you,” he added.

It dawned on Kagura that Zero considered him part of this trusted circle. The fact that he’d been allowed to participate in this meeting was proof of that.

Realising this, Kagura couldn’t help the small smile that tugged at his lips, despite his efforts to keep a straight face.

Seeing Kagura’s expression, Haiiro shot him a glare.

“Don’t get cocky, ‘Citizen’,” Haiiro snapped, his sharp eyes gleaming like a predator sizing up its prey. He looked at everyone in the room, sparing only Zero.

“If anyone betrays us, I’ll tear them to shreds,” he threatened.

“Sure, sure,” Kataware replied nonchalantly.

Riki, however, met Haiiro’s challenge with a grin, saying, “I don’t plan on losing.”

Zero, standing beside Kagura, chuckled at their exchange. It seemed this was their way of easing the tension.

Capturing Toono Ryouji, who was hiding in the Invincible Castle under the protection of Li Azhar, was no small task—it was a mission that could cost them their lives.

―――And because it’s life-or-death, I won’t let anyone lose their life.

Kagura made that vow silently, noticing how much he had changed.

Back when he was trying to bring down the Eastern Alliance on his own, he had constantly put himself in danger, using himself as bait without a second thought. He hadn’t realised it at the time, but perhaps he had been treating his life as disposable.

But now, whether it was Zero, the Enwu team, or himself, he couldn’t allow that anymore.

―――I want them to live. And… I want to live, too.

Living wasn’t just breathing, sleeping, and eating. It meant protecting the things and values that mattered to him and surviving through it all.

That Saturday night, as planned, Kagura headed to the ‘Invincible Castle’ with Zero. From the driver’s seat of the sedan, Kataware explained their approach.

“I’ll tweak the system so the door on the twelfth floor can be accessed with an SS-rank invitation card between 2:00 and 2:30 a.m. I’ll also disrupt the security on the thirteenth floor. But tonight’s goal is just to map out the area for X-Day. Don’t go too deep.”

Sitting beside Kagura, Zero reiterated, “Only I will go through the door. You’ll stay on watch. Understood?”

“Yeah, yeah, I got it,” Kagura replied, unable to keep the dissatisfaction from his voice.

“There’s a party in the twelfth-floor hall. Dress code is semi-formal. You two are good with that, right?” Kataware asked, glancing at Kagura and Zero in tuxedos through the rearview mirror.

“…If anything, the two of you look even more like thugs,” Kataware muttered.

“Shut it,” Zero said, lightly kicking the back of Kataware’s seat.

The refined clothing only made Zero’s natural roughness less apparent, but enhancing the aura of someone who lived in the shadows.

―――Not that I can talk.

Kagura smirked, recalling his own reflection before they left. His sharp features stood out more than usual, elevating what Sanae would call his ‘intellectual yakuza’ vibe.

It seemed Zero had similar thoughts. Their eyes met, and they exchanged a playful glance, narrowing their eyes at each other in mock amusement.

As they neared the ‘Invincible Castle’, Zero’s phone rang. Answering it, his demeanour changed instantly as he leaned forward, his voice rising.

“…Understood. Get him to a hospital. We’re heading there now.”

He hung up and barked an order to Kataware.

“Head to Okita Clinic. Now.”

“What happened?” Kagura asked as Zero ended the call.

Zero shot him a piercing glare, his voice grave.

“Renjou’s been critically injured.”

“Renjou? What happened?” Kagura asked.

“He was being kept restrained in a containment bag, but he bit the throat of the person bringing him food. They say the feeder almost got their throat ripped out, and in panic, they shot him,” Zero replied.

Kagura could vividly imagine the scene. Nobody could remain calm when faced with Renjou’s ferocity.

“We can’t afford to let Renjou die right now. But letting him out of confinement is also too dangerous. For now, we’ll head to the clinic and bolster security there.”

As Kataware accelerated the car, he sighed.

“Li Azhar is away at the ‘Invincible Castle’ in Seoul, and given the conditions for using the twelfth floor, tonight was ideal. But it can’t be helped.”

The sedan slid into the underground parking lot of a hospital in the suburbs and suddenly came to a screeching halt.

“What on earth…?” Kataware muttered in shock as Kagura and Zero leapt out of the car through the doors on either side.

Seven men were sprawled on the ground in the parking lot, all grievously injured. A doctor in a lab coat and three nurses were frantically administering first aid.

A middle-aged doctor addressed Zero.

“We were waiting here for the emergency patient to arrive when we heard a commotion. By the time we came to check, this is what we found.”

One of the injured men, barely conscious and bleeding heavily from the abdomen, managed to speak weakly to Zero.

“S-sorry… Renjou… has been taken.”

Zero knelt on one knee beside the man, placing a hand on his shoulder to steady him.

“The Eastern Alliance?” he asked sharply.

“Probably,” the man rasped, struggling to breathe.

“They… also took… the security guard…”

“Was it Ao?”

Zero was referring to the guard with extensive burn scars across his face. Ao had been rescued by Enwu after nearly being sold overseas by the Eastern Alliance.

After assisting with transporting the seven injured men to the underground clinic, Kataware reviewed the surveillance footage from the security room. It showed around twenty individuals, presumably from the Eastern Alliance, attacking the seven men who had been transporting Renjou. The attackers loaded both Renjou and the security guard into a van and sped off.

“This attack happening now can only mean the mole tipped them off,” Kataware said grimly.

Zero’s face twisted in anger.

“…No matter what, we’re going after that van.”

If they had only taken Renjou, Zero might not have pursued them. But with their ally also kidnapped, the situation had changed.

―――What I need to do now is…

Kagura made a quick, level-headed decision and conveyed it to Zero and Kataware.

“I’m going to the ‘Invincible Castle’.”

Zero glared at him.

“I’m getting Ao back. Tonight’s infiltration is off,” Zero said firmly.

“Then you do that. I’m breaking into the thirteenth floor. With this commotion, Toono must already know something is happening to you guys. That makes tonight the perfect opportunity.”

Kataware nodded in agreement.
