The Beggar’s Staff of Lao Ba Chapter 28.3

Chapter 28

Part 3

Lian Wushang nodded with understanding. Wen Heng’s current state was only natural. It was true that Wen Heng embodied the will of the Heaven-Supporting Giant Tree, but he was now extremely weak. His spiritual energy was depleted, and merely being able to foresee the impending calamity was already remarkable.

Once Wen Heng truly attained enlightenment, he would become a peerless powerhouse of this age. He would comprehend all things in the world, capable of stabilizing mountains and rivers, extinguishing stars and dust. For now… while he was still young, it was the perfect time to tease him.

Lian Wushang smiled mischievously, and Wen Heng stared at him, completely transfixed.

“I wonder how Doggie is doing now,” Wen Heng said awkwardly, shifting his gaze away. Why was he always so irresistibly drawn to Lian Wushang? It was damn strange. Poor Wen Heng had no idea that the very person sitting beside him was the boundless vitality the Heaven-Shattering Giant Tree craved. If he weren’t drawn to Lian Wushang, that would be truly unnatural.

“If you’re really worried about him, once we have the money to sort out our identity papers, we can go visit him at the Qingcheng Sect.” Lian Wushang remained optimistic. Wen Heng laughed helplessly: “Forget about sorting out identity papers— I owe you a hairpin right now. Who knows when I’ll have the money to redeem it?”

“It’s fine. If we really can’t get it back, then forget it.” Lian Wushang was remarkably unconcerned. Such material possessions? Qinglian Continent had at least eight thousand, if not ten thousand.

The two chatted idly for a moment. Meanwhile, another heavily tattooed burly man in the gambling house kept glancing their way from the pavilion. Lian Wushang suspected the man had grown wary of them. If they approached this gambling house now, the burly man would surely change his attitude, convinced they were con artists.

“Are we going to sit here all afternoon? Why don’t we try the next gambling house?” Wen Heng still had Lian Wushang’s hairpin on his mind. He understood Lian Wushang’s thoughts. Lian Wushang wanted him to pursue the high-end route—in layman’s terms, it was better to read the fortune of one wealthy person than a hundred ordinary ones.

Lian Wushang stood up: “Let’s go. There’s plenty of time.” Moving on to the next one, Wen Heng rose and reached out to pull Lian Wushang along: “Come on.”

Several gambling houses lined Nanshi, separated by just two streets. This establishment bustled far more than the last. A brown cloth curtain hung over its entrance, bearing the character ‘Shen’.

The place was packed to the rafters, with not even a doorman in sight. Gamblers streamed in and out—some beaming with joy, others with faces like thunderclouds. In gambling dens, where there are winners, there must be losers.

Lian Wushang and Wen Heng stood at the entrance. Lian Wushang asked, “Can you tell which of these people is about to lose?” Wen Heng: …

After observing for a moment, Wen Heng pointed at a slightly plump middle-aged man dressed in bamboo-green robes. “I can only see him crying the hardest next.”

Lian Wushang: …So you can only see who’ll suffer? You really do sound like a jinx. No wonder Doggie always calls him a jinx.

The bamboo-green-clad man, his money pouch bulging, was cheerfully about to step inside when a tall, gaunt, sallow-faced man blocked his path. The man immediately bristled: Who the hell are you? Move it! Move it! Good dogs don’t block the way! Do you even know who I am?”

Wen Heng promptly delivered his curse: “Sir, you’re about to cry your eyes out. You really shouldn’t go to the gambling house.”

Shen Si sucked in a breath: “Pah! Pah! Pah! Bad luck! Bad luck! I’ll smack my own mouth! Hey, who the hell are you anyway?”

Lian Wushang’s forehead was covered in cold sweat. He hadn’t even figured out how to fleece this sucker, and Wen Heng had already charged out looking for a beating. Lian Wushang covered his face in frustration. What a waste of his clever mind—dealing with Wen Heng was enough to shatter it into eight pieces.

Wen Heng spoke with inscrutable depth: “I am Wen Heng, the Wandering Sage of a Thousand Schemes. Your luck is poor today. Do not enter the gambling house.”

Shen Si rolled up his sleeves. “Oh my, this hot temper of mine! Servants! Beat him! Make him eat his crow! What kind of fortune-teller is this? Some charlatan!”

Three or four green-clad servants wielding clubs burst out from the gambling den. “Fourth Master! We’re here!”

The servants shouted at Wen Heng: “Where did this beggar come from? Looking like a penniless fool, yet daring to block Fourth Master Shen’s path! Beat him! Beat him!”

This gambling den was actually run by this Fourth Master Shen! Lian Wushang nearly knelt before Wen Heng. Wen Heng, you really know how to pick people. Without a word, Lian Wushang grabbed Wen Heng and dragged him away. The two ran until they were breathless before finally shaking off their pursuers.

Lian Wushang prided himself on being a man who took life’s ups and downs in stride, but right now, he had no patience left for Wen Heng: “We should buy an almanac later. Guess we didn’t check the auspicious dates before heading out today. Not a good day to open shop.”

Their first deal was still pending verification when their second transaction ended in a beating. Weng Heng wiped the dust from his face with resignation. “I hadn’t even finished speaking. Who knew the guy had such a temper?”

Lian Wushang retorted, “No. Clearly, you just don’t know how to talk.”
