After processing the scene, everyone returned to the Municipal Bureau. On the way, Ling Yue asked, “What about that Xin Rong guy? What’s his background?”
“One of the executives at Taiyi Shipping Company,” Wen Yu replied.
“The hell?!” Ling Yue exclaimed. “Isn’t that the same company Ju Jiezhen’s husband works for? …The husband goes out to sea, and the boss sleeps with his wife?!”
“But wasn’t Li Cheng a pimp?” Kong Qinmao added. “How did he end up mixed up with a shipping company executive?”
“The strangest thing is that one of them was an agent for high-end entertainment venues, and the other was a corporate executive,” Xia Ling answered. “If they wanted an affair, they had plenty of options. Why Ju Jiezhen?”
“Was this their first time?” Ling Yue wondered. “Or had the three of them been involved for a while already?”
“Brother He’s preliminary assessment is death by drug overdose,” Wen Yu disagreed. “But I found messages on Ju Jiezhen’s phone showing that Liao Yongqing had suspected her of cheating months ago. They’d been arguing about it ever since. He even sent threatening messages saying that if she didn’t break things off with that bastard, he’d come home and kill both of them.”
“So Liao Yongqing only knew about one affair partner and had no idea there was a second?” Zhang Tianhua asked.
At that, Han Huaixiao replied, “Even though Li Cheng and Xin Rong were both there, we still can’t conclude that she was involved with both of them.”
“If the three of them really died of an overdose,” Kong Qinmao frowned, “where did the drugs come from? Was it their first time using, or had they been taking them for a long time?”
“…”
“They didn’t look like long-term users,” Xia Hang said, and Han Huaixiao nodded. “People who’ve been abusing drugs for a long time usually have obvious physical signs. Yellowish complexion, emaciation, sunken eyes, vacant stares, receding gums, loose teeth… None of the three showed those symptoms.”
“So maybe it really was their first time?” Ling Yue suggested. “No experience, accidentally took too much?”
“It’s late,” Han Huaixiao concluded. “Until the forensic and trace evidence reports come back, we can’t determine the direction of the investigation. Everyone, go home and get some proper rest. Starting tomorrow, we’ll probably be working overtime again.”
……………….
As usual, Xia Hang lingered until everyone else had left. Just as he was about to leave the office, Han Huaixiao called out to him with a “Xia Hang, stay a moment.”
Xia Hang returned to his desk and sat down to wait. His workstation was almost bare, with nothing unnecessary on it. Not knowing how long he’d be waiting, he casually picked up a pen and spun it between his fingers.
When Han Huaixiao finally came out of his office, he found Xia Hang slouched lazily in his chair, twirling the pen and staring blankly into space. Clearly, he had drifted into one of his idle daydreams.
If it had been Ling Yue or Kong Qinmao, they would have pulled out their phones the instant they had five minutes of free time. But Han Huaixiao realized he had almost never seen Xia Hang playing on his phone. Walking over, he snapped his fingers in front of him.
“Come back to earth. Let’s go.”
“Okay.” Xia Hang dropped the pen back into the holder. As they headed downstairs, he still asked, “Captain Han, why did you ask me to stay?”
“So you can give me a ride,” Han Huaixiao replied. “I left my lighter at your place.”
Xia Hang’s steps faltered. “Oh… Don’t you have more than one lighter? I could just bring the one you left tomorrow.”
“What?” Han Huaixiao glanced at him. “Don’t want me going to your place?”
“No,” Xia Hang said quickly. “It’s just that we were on the road all day. I thought you might be tired.”
“Stop talking and walk.”
And so, they returned to Xia Hang’s residential complex. After getting off the elevator, Xia Hang lowered his head and headed toward his apartment, only for Han Huaixiao to grab his arm.
“Don’t go over there yet.”
Following his gaze, Xia Hang spotted a large cardboard box sitting outside his door.
“Did you order something online?” Han Huaixiao asked.
“…No.” Xia Hang thought for a moment.
The two of them immediately thought of the threatening note as they exchanged a look.
“There’s no shipping label on it,” Xia Hang said. “Probably not a delivery.”
“Don’t get close to it,” Han Huaixiao said. “I’ll call someone over with equipment to check it.” But just as Han Huaixiao was making the call, Xia Hang’s phone buzzed. Looking down, he saw a message from Su Cheng:
[The eggs and some vegetables are outside your door. They’re all organic. Put them in the fridge when you get home.]
Xia Hang tugged at Han Huaixiao’s sleeve and showed him the message.
Han Huaixiao stared at it for a moment, then said into the phone: “It’s nothing. No need to come over.”
On the other side, Qi Xuhui, the SWAT captain, said: “That’s good. Don’t hang up yet. Didn’t your Ling Yue recently say he wanted a basketball game with our SWAT team? When’s that happening?”
“Recently? Not a chance.” Han Huaixiao hung up.
Xia Hang didn’t dare say a word. He unlocked the door, bent down to pick up the large cardboard box on the floor, and was about to head inside when Han Huaixiao pushed the door open first and walked in.
Han Huaixiao swept his gaze around the apartment before finally stepping aside to let Xia Hang enter. Carrying the box, Xia Hang’s mind was filled with one thought:
If Su Cheng hadn’t sent that message, and Qi Xuhui had actually rushed over with detection equipment… when they opened the box and discovered it was full of eggs and vegetables, what kind of expression would Han Huaixiao have made?
He pressed his lips together, trying not to laugh, but Han Huaixiao saw through him immediately. “If you want to laugh, just laugh,” he said. “Think you can hold it in?”
“…”
Therefore, Xia Hang dropped the box onto the floor and burst out laughing. Han Huaixiao sprawled comfortably onto the sofa as if it were his own home and watched him laugh. Only after Xia Hang had nearly exhausted himself did he speak: “…You dragged me all over the place today. Your leader is tired and hungry. Please bring something for your leader to eat.”
Xia Hang walked over to the refrigerator and opened it, but there wasn’t a single ingredient inside that he knew how to cook, so he turned to the box Su Cheng had delivered. Besides eggs, it contained a pile of vegetables: plump white radishes, bright green napa cabbage, crisp lettuce, and cauliflower.
Staring at them, he felt a headache coming on.
After some hesitation, he took out his phone and searched online. Two minutes later, confidence restored, he rolled up his sleeves and began washing and chopping vegetables.
Lying on the sofa with his eyes closed and half asleep, Han Huaixiao listened to the sounds coming from the kitchen.
The rush of running water. Then, chopping noises coming at irregular intervals. Just from the rhythm alone, he could tell how inexperienced the person holding the knife was.
He never misplaced things, and his memory was excellent.
When he’d gone to pick Xia Hang up that morning, he hadn’t even taken his lighter out. The story about coming over to retrieve it was nothing more than an excuse.
After work, when he watched Xia Hang leave, he remembered the note.
A note that looked flirtatious on the surface but was filled with malice underneath… And Xia Hang’s words:
“It’s an organization.”
From that moment on, he could no longer bring himself to watch Xia Hang go home alone. So when they stepped out of the elevator earlier and saw the cardboard box outside the apartment, he’d been overwhelmingly grateful he’d followed Xia Hang back. The box had turned out to be food.
But what if it hadn’t?
What if it had contained a bomb?
Or something else intended to hurt Xia Hang?
What if Xia Hang had opened it without thinking?
When he first learned Xia Hang would be joining the Major Crimes Unit, Han Huaixiao had been furious. How could someone abruptly break up with him, disappear for eight years, and then suddenly reappear?! But when Xia Hang truly materialized in his office, and Han Huaixiao saw his back for the first time, the anger became tangled with bitterness, grievance, and relief.
The man who had vanished without a trace for so many years… was alive.
Was safe.
Looking at Xia Hang standing beside him again, Han Huaixiao had tried to appear indifferent. But he couldn’t deny he’d been hoping for something. Why had Xia Hang come to the Major Crimes Unit? Was it because of him?
He wanted the answer. And feared receiving it. Yet he couldn’t stop himself from asking, so he’d asked twice. Once on the rooftop of Mingcheng Residential Complex, asking why Xia Hang had come to the Major Crimes Unit.
Xia Hang had remained silent.
Then again, in Qingling Village, demanding the real reason for their breakup all those years ago.
Again, silence.
Unable to give him the answer he wanted and unwilling to lie, Xia Hang chose silence every time. Han Huaixiao knew perfectly well that Xia Hang’s assignment to the Major Crimes Unit came from higher authorities, and once his mission was completed, he would leave.
Leave the unit.
Leave Lang City entirely.
Yet despite knowing all of that, Han Huaixiao still had unresolved feelings for him. Seeing Xia Hang injured and acting as if it didn’t matter made him furious. Seeing him lying alone in a hospital bed made his chest ache so badly he could barely breathe. Even when their cars were traveling along the same highway, only five hundred meters apart, the sight of someone else sitting in the passenger seat still bothered him. But since he would always fall for him no matter how much time passed… Since Xia Hang would inevitably leave again…
Then he would simply cherish the time they still had together.
“Han Huaixiao, come eat!” Xia Hang’s voice, somehow carrying an inexplicable sense of accomplishment, drifted over from the dining table.
Han Huaixiao removed the arm covering his eyes and carefully suppressed the tangle of emotions inside him. Listening to Xia Hang repeatedly calling him over to eat, he suddenly regretted making him cook.
Xia Hang couldn’t cook.
…And neither could he. But at least he knew how to make noodles and fried rice, while Xia Hang’s culinary expertise extended only to instant noodles. He didn’t even dare imagine what kind of dark cuisine awaited him on that dining table.
“Did you actually fall asleep?” Seeing Han Huaixiao still lying there, Xia Hang thought he had dozed off. He walked over and discovered that Han Huaixiao’s eyes were open. His expression, however, looked utterly hopeless.
Leaning over the back of the sofa, Xia Hang asked with concern, “What’s wrong with you?”
Looking up at him from below, Han Huaixiao found that even from such a terrible angle, Xia Hang still looked unfairly handsome.
“…Nothing.”
“Then come on. Let’s eat.”
So Han Huaixiao spent several seconds mentally preparing himself before heading to the bathroom to wash his hands. Afterward, he walked to the dining table. To his surprise, there were no charred dishes, no half-raw meat, and no culinary disasters. Instead, sitting on the table were: a large basin of boiled vegetables, a plate of boiled eggs, and steamed corn.
“…”
The vegetables had been boiled in plain water.
“…”
Literally plain water.
Radishes, cabbage, lettuce… not a single drop of oil was floating on top.
Xia Hang emerged carrying two sets of chopsticks and bowls, along with a dipping sauce bowl. “Give it a try,” he coaxed. “If it’s terrible, we’ll order takeout.”
Han Huaixiao picked up a piece of cabbage, dipped it into the sauce, and tasted it. To his surprise, it wasn’t bad, so he asked in surprise: “How’d you make this?”
“I learned it online,” Xia Hang proudly answered. “Chili powder, minced garlic, chopped scallions, salt, then pour hot oil over everything and mix it together.” He looked at him expectantly. “So? Is it edible?”
“…Not bad.”
Picking up an egg, Xia Hang continued, “The internet said to boil eggs for five minutes after the water starts boiling. I boiled these for eight, so they should be cooked.” He cracked one open.
Fully cooked.
Relieved, he dropped it into Han Huaixiao’s bowl, continuing, “I studied rice-to-water ratios for a while and still couldn’t figure them out. I was afraid I’d mess it up, so I didn’t make rice. Will eggs and corn be enough? If not, I can go downstairs and buy something else.”
Han Huaixiao picked up a corn cob and took a bite. It was sweet, soft, and surprisingly good, so he answered, “No need. This is enough. Eat.”
In the end, they finished one giant basin of boiled vegetables, six eggs, and eight ears of corn. Xia Hang ate roughly a third, but Han Huaixiao devoured the remaining two-thirds.
After dinner, Xia Hang loaded the dishes into the dishwasher. When he returned to the living room, he found Han Huaixiao sitting on the sofa watching a news rerun on television, with no sign he intended to leave.
Not understanding what he was planning, Xia Hang sat down beside him and watched the news as well. But they’d spent the entire day driving, sailing, and investigating crime scenes… Now that he was full, he felt like he could fall asleep the instant he closed his eyes.
After forcing himself to watch five minutes of news, he finally couldn’t take it anymore, asking, “Han Huaixiao, aren’t you tired?”
“I am.” Han Huaixiao didn’t even glance at him. “That’s why I can’t be bothered driving back and forth tonight. Find me a set of pajamas. I’ll make do on your sofa.”
“You’re staying over?” At that, half of Xia Hang’s sleepiness instantly vanished.
“Is that a problem?” Han Huaixiao narrowed his eyes.
“No,” Xia Hang surrendered immediately. “I’ll go find something for you.”
Opening his pitifully sparse wardrobe, Xia Hang searched for a long time before locating a loose set of loungewear. However, the problem was underwear. Han Huaixiao was larger than him in every respect. Broader frame, wider hips, and…
…other dimensions.
His underwear definitely wouldn’t fit. Carrying the clothes back out, Xia Hang awkwardly said, “I found clothes, but… um… there’s no underwear you can wear. My washing machine has a quick-dry cycle, so you can… wash yours right away and put them back on once they’re dry.”
Han Huaixiao looked at his uncomfortable expression and suddenly felt like teasing him.
“Wash what right away?”
“…After you take them off.” Xia Hang froze.
“Take off what?”
“…”
Looking at the faint smile tugging at Han Huaixiao’s lips, Xia Hang instantly realized he was doing it on purpose. Unable to help himself, he shot him a glare, but the glare contained no real anger. To Han Huaixiao, those clear eyes seemed filled with an indescribably intimate warmth, sending heat surging through his entire body.
So he coughed lightly, grabbed the clothes, and retreated to the bathroom before he could say anything else and embarrass himself any further. Inside the bathroom, however, a certain part of him became increasingly energetic. But just as he was on the verge of handling the problem himself, Han Huaixiao suddenly remembered the reason Xia Hang had given when breaking up with him years ago:
“Our sex life isn’t compatible.”
“…”
Han Huaixiao ground his teeth. He knew that wasn’t the real reason for the breakup! At least… probably not. Still, sometimes he couldn’t help wondering whether it had been part of the reason. Afterward, he’d spent countless hours online studying pictures and reading articles, comparing, analyzing, and evaluating himself objectively.
His conclusion was that the incompatibility had nothing to do with his hardware. The problem was probably his technique…
…Which felt deeply unfair.
How was he supposed to have good technique when he had no experience?!
Before Xia Hang, the furthest he’d ever gone involved using his hands. Of course, his skills weren’t great, and besides… Xia Hang had only given him two chances to prove himself before disappearing from his life entirely.
Thinking of that, Han Huaixiao ground his teeth once again.
After finishing his shower and coming out, he noticed an extra pillow and a thin blanket on the sofa.
“At your height,” Xia Hang said, “sleeping on the sofa is going to be miserable. Why don’t you take the bed? I’ll sleep here.”
“No need.” Han Huaixiao headed straight for the sofa.
Knowing how stubborn he could be once he made up his mind, Xia Hang didn’t argue further and went to take his own shower. When he came out, he saw Han Huaixiao’s long limbs awkwardly folded onto the narrow sofa. He reached the bedroom door, hesitated, then turned back, mumbling, “Han Huaixiao… why don’t you sleep on the bed too?”
Han Huaixiao hadn’t fallen asleep yet, so he looked up at him.
“…The bed’s big enough for two people.”
So, carrying his pillow and blanket, Han Huaixiao followed him into the bedroom without another word. The sofa’s support was terrible anyway, and he had genuinely been uncomfortable.
Eight years later, the two of them shared a bed once more.
Surrounded by each other’s familiar presence, neither entertained many wandering thoughts. What they felt more than anything else was a sense of stability.
And peace.
Before long, both fell asleep.
………………………..
The next morning, when they arrived at the Municipal Bureau, the forensic and autopsy reports were already available. A cup of coffee bitter enough to rival life itself sat beside He Zhengye. Rubbing the dark circles under his eyes, he yawned, reporting, “There were no signs of struggle or external injuries on any of the three victims. Cause of death matches our preliminary assessment: drug overdose. However, the drug compounds detected in the samples don’t match anything currently on record.”
“A new synthetic drug?” Han Huaixiao frowned.
“I’ve already sent the results to the Narcotics Division. We’ll wait for their analysis.” He Zhengye nodded.
“There was only one used condom at the scene,” Han Huaixiao asked, “whose semen was inside it?”
“Xin Rong’s.” He Zhengye flipped through his notes. “But the semen found on Ju Jiezhen belonged to Li Cheng.”
“If they were all fooling around together,” Ling Yue frowned, “why did one guy wear a condom while the other didn’t?”
“No idea,” He Zhengye shrugged. “Maybe Xin Rong was a germaphobe.” After a pause, he added, “…Actually, if he were a germaphobe, he probably wouldn’t be sleeping around in the first place.”
“Estimated time of death?” Han Huaixiao asked.
“Between noon and two o’clock yesterday afternoon.”
After that, Han Huaixiao turned to Liu Yan from Forensics, asking, “Anything from your side?”
“The sexual enhancement pill box only had Xin Rong’s fingerprints on it,” Liu Yan replied, “No one else’s. As for the apartment, in addition to the family of three, we only found traces of Li Cheng, Xin Rong, and Liao Yongqing’s mother. No evidence of anyone else entering the residence.”
“Doors, windows, and all access points were normal. No signs of forced entry or suspicious activity.”
Zhang Tianhua considered the findings, concluding, “If there are no signs of outside intrusion, and the victims showed no signs of struggle, then they likely took the drugs voluntarily.”
“But we didn’t find any drug paraphernalia. If they ingested the drugs orally, there should still have been packaging left behind…” he frowned. “But there was nothing.”
“Where did the packaging go?”
“Could there have been a fourth person at the scene who took it away?” Kong Qinmao asked, and Zhang Tianhua nodded. “If there was another person present, then it’s possible the victims didn’t accidentally overdose.”
“They may have been deliberately dosed.”
At that, Han Huaixiao began assigning tasks:
“Xia Ling, talk to Liao Yongqing’s daughter again. See if she can provide any information. Be careful with your wording. Don’t trigger her.”
“Understood.” Xia Ling nodded.
“Li Cheng was acquainted with Qu Mingzhe and Manager Liu.” Han Huaixiao looked at Xia Hang and Wen Yu. “You two work together and investigate how Xin Rong and Li Cheng became connected. See if it leads us to the trafficking organization.”
“Got it.”
“Brother Hua, Ling Yue, borrow a narcotics dog from the Narcotics Division. Search Ju Jiezhen’s apartment and the surrounding area, especially the trash bins. See if you can locate any discarded drug packaging.”
The two acknowledged the order.
“Qinmao, you’re with me. We’re questioning Liao Yongqing.”
…………………
Liao Yongqing was in his forties, with the face of an honest, hardworking man. Throughout the interview, he remained cooperative.
“What time did you arrive home yesterday?” Kong Qinmao began.
“A little after six in the evening.”
“Specifically?”
“Around six-thirty.”
“When you opened the door, what did you see?”
“The three of them were naked in the master bedroom.”
“What positions were they in?”
“One man was lying on the recliner facing the bed. My wife was lying on her back near the outer side of the bed. The other man was next to her, lying on his side and facing her.”
“When you found them, were they already dead?”
“…I only checked my wife’s breathing.” His voice lowered. “When I realized she was gone, I called the police immediately.”
“You didn’t check the other two?”
“No.”
“You already suspected your wife was cheating before this?”
“I suspected it.”
“Why?”
“I saw messages between her and a man on her phone. And once I found another man’s lighter in our bedroom.”
“Do you still have the lighter?”
“…I smashed it in anger. My wife cleaned up afterward, so it’s probably gone.”
“Do you know who she was cheating with?”
“No.”
“Do you know Li Cheng?”
“No.”
“What about Xin Rong?”
At that, Liao Yongqing lowered his head even further, answering, “I don’t know him either.”
Xin Rong was a senior executive at the same company where Liao Yongqing worked, yet he claimed not to know him. Kong Qinmao glanced at Han Huaixiao, who remained expressionless.
“Did you tell your wife in advance that you were coming home yesterday?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because I suspected she was having an affair. This time I deliberately didn’t tell her when I’d be returning, because I wanted to see what she was doing at home.”
“When did your ship dock?”
“Eleven in the morning.”
“And when did you disembark?”
“Five in the afternoon. The ship docked at eleven, but we still had work to do after arriving.”
“Was your daughter home when you got back?”
The moment his daughter was mentioned, his shoulders slumped further, mumbling, “…She was in her room, but her head is not right. Most of the time, she stays in her room drawing and doesn’t pay much attention to what’s happening around her.”
“When I got home, I opened her bedroom door, and she came out. Then I took her across the hall to Auntie Han’s apartment. How is she now?”
“She’s with your mother.” Kong Qinmao answered.
The questioning was essentially finished, so he looked toward Han Huaixiao to see if he had anything else to ask.
Han Huaixiao gave a slight shake of his head. After leaving the interrogation room, Kong Qinmao asked, “Captain Han, do you think Liao Yongqing could be the killer?”
“What do you think?” Han Huaixiao replied.
For a moment, Kong Qinmao actually considered it, but he quickly dismissed the thought. “I don’t think it’s very likely,” he said, “but two things felt strange.”
“Normally, when someone suddenly discovers a dead body, they’re severely shocked. Finding three bodies at once would be even worse. When people experience extreme shock, their minds usually go blank, but Liao Yongqing remembered exactly where all three bodies were and what positions they were in.”
“And another thing.”
“When I asked whether he knew Li Cheng, he immediately said no. But when I asked about Xin Rong, he lowered his head even more and hesitated for a second before answering.”
“Not bad,” Han Huaixiao nodded. “Your interrogation techniques and observational skills have improved a lot.”
Suddenly receiving praise, Kong Qinmao grinned sheepishly, and Han Huaixiao continued, “Let’s go.”
“We’re paying a visit to Xin Rong’s home.”

Story Synopsis:
When Jian Ru was young, a fire took both his parents and half his face. Though he survived, one of his legs was left crippled, and the scar running across his ruined features made him the subject of fear, pity, and quiet disgust for years.
Still, he endured.
Then the floods came to Changshou Village.
Fields were destroyed, homes swallowed by water, and the villagers decided the River God needed a sacrifice. But the one they chose was not Jian Ru.
It was Zhang Jiao, the village’s gentle and beautiful ger.
Jian Ru rushed forward, ready to fight for his life, but instead, he was the one tied up, gagged, and forced beneath a red bridal veil.
“Don’t blame us,” someone whispered beside his ear. “Jiao’ger is timid. He’d be afraid. You’re already crippled anyway.”
“Better to fulfill this for us.”
That night, Jian Ru fell into the river, prepared to die. But when he woke again beneath the red veil, the River God before him was not a monster at all.
The man had long black hair, startling beauty, and skin pale with illness, but after taking one look at Jian Ru’s scarred face…
…the River God was so shocked he fainted on the spot.
With no firewood in the cave and the man burning with fever, Jian Ru had no choice but to hold him through the night to keep him warm.
Only afterward did he discover…
The man was no River God.
He was Li Jintong, the frail second young master of the town physician’s family.
Jian Ru thought Li Jintong married him only to take responsibility for that night.
Instead, their days together slowly became warmer and fuller than he had ever imagined.
