VGSB Chapter 45

Although he had already started using anti-lost bracelet, Ling Huan still didn’t take Beibei with him when he went out in the morning.

He prepared two small bowls of snacks, gently pinching Beibei’s ears and carefully instructing him that one was for the morning and the other for the evening.  He also refilled his water bowl, making sure everything was ready before confidently leaving the house. He didn’t notice the golden figure that quickly darted from the windowsill and disappeared into the rose bushes in the backyard just as he stepped out the door.

Leaning against the wall and watching Ling Huan’s figure gradually disappear, Lu Jinbei impatiently put on his beeping light brain.  A message from the official channels kept reminding him every half hour that he still hadn’t processed an invitation from the First Military Academy.

The moment he transformed into a human, his slender fingertips touched a dark magnetic blocker, pushing it against the pink anti-lost bracelet.

Ling Huan’s light brain, when connected to the anti-lost bracelet allowed his location to be viewed at any time. Using a signal blocker can cut off the signal display, and the smart device will continue to show the last known location before the signal was cut off.

Lu Jinbei fastened the buttons on his cuffs, neatly concealing the locations of the light brain and the anti-lost bracelet[footnote]For this chapter, Google keep translating 光脑 as smart/personal device instead of light brain and 防走失环 as anti-loss tracking device instead of anti-lost beacelet/collar. Should I change it??[/footnote].

……

Following the system’s instructions, he made a unique, personalized sweet wine for the insomniac alpha. Ling Huan sniffed it; it smelled sweet and should taste quite good. He smoothly bottled the wine and then discreetly placed it on the table.

Next to it was a small table piled high in a triangular shape, stacked with fruit wines that would be given away for free during today’s event. At first glance, it looked exactly the same as the one in front of Ling Huan.

Besides Ling Huan, there was only one other employee left in the small convenience store.

The clerk who was standing on a chair and stuffing goods into the shelves suddenly had a distorted expression. He held his stomach and slowly got down from the chair. He walked out holding the wall, feeling a little overwhelmed, and waved to the smiling Ling Huan.

“I’m going out for a bit, could you please watch the shop for me? I suddenly have a stomach ache, it’s really strange…”

009 had provided him with an item that could temporarily alter his appearance before they set off. Now, his appearance was so unremarkable that he would be impossible to find in a crowd; he looks like a completely ordinary passerby.

Ordinary passerby Ling Huan responded with an “okay,” and after watching the store employee completely disappear out the door, he reached out and placed his hand on the shelf behind him that was specifically used for holding drinks.

A beeping electronic sound echoed in his mind.

【Illusion prop used successfully. 】

Ling Huan’s vision blurred for a moment, and when he looked again, the shelves were completely empty, not a single bottle of drink remaining. He reached out to touch them and found that the illusionary props provided by the system were quite amazing; he couldn’t even touch them, making them incredibly realistic.

【It will return to its original state after fifteen minutes, and the store employee will return around that time. 】

As soon as 009’s sound faded, a sudden “Welcome!” was heard from the shop entrance.

“Hello, I’d like to buy a bottle of drink. Do you have any…”

The youth who had just entered spoke in a low voice, and if you weren’t paying close attention, it would be easy to miss what he said.

Ling Huan raised his eyes and glanced at Luo Sheng, whose hands were awkwardly placed in front of him.

He wondered if Luo Sheng also has a system like him, allowing him(LS) to know information related to Lu Jinbei in advance. Today, Luo Sheng looked meticulously dressed, exuding a youthful charm. He wore a white shirt, a light blue knitted sweater, and a small bear charm dangling from his backpack, making him look incredibly innocent.

A faint, delicate fragrance wafted through the air, smelling like a kind of flower. Ling Huan found it familiar, but couldn’t for the life of him remember what kind of flower it was.

【Luo Sheng is almost in his heat cycle, and currently he can only manage to go to school by relying on daily injections of suppressants to barely control his pheromones. What the host smelled was likely the scent of his pheromones. 】

“What scent is it?” Ling Huan wrinkled his nose, walking back from the shelves towards the door. The closer he got, the more pungent the smell became.

【Jasmine green tea. 】

Ling Huan walked over to Luo Sheng, a faint smile playing on his lips, and said gently, “What would you like to buy, sir? The convenience store is small, but it has a wide variety of items. Tell me what you’re looking for, and I’ll help you find it.”

“I just wanted to buy a bottle of drink, but how come…” Luo Sheng looked around in confusion, only to find that the shelves where the drinks were supposed to be were completely empty, as if they had just been raided. “There’s not a single bottle of drink?”

“Oh, we rarely have people coming to our store to buy beverage. We’re currently restocking, so all the beverage is temporarily stored in the warehouse.” Ling Huan, who became very enthusiastic when he wasn’t using his own face for sales, reached out and picked up the sweet wine he had placed on the table earlier, and offered it to Luo Sheng. “This bottle is part of a promotion we’re running. Any customer who comes to the store, even if they don’t buy anything, can take one bottle for free.”

Looking at the large stack of identical beverage bottles piled up behind Ling Huan, Luo Sheng bit his lip, his eyes scanning around, and he whispered, “Are there any other options?”

Ling Huan said gently, “The customer can choose to take it or not buy it.”

Fearing that Luo Sheng wouldn’t take the bottle, he had already preemptively removed all the distracting options for Luo Sheng.

“This bottle of fruit wine is free, so what’s there to hesitate about?”

Upon hearing the words “fruit wine,” Luo Sheng’s eyes lit up. He immediately took the item from Ling Huan’s hand, opened the lid, and sniffed it. He could indeed smell the aroma of wine, and a smile appeared on his face. Without looking back, he left the convenience store.

Ling Huan leaned against the counter, listening to the “Welcome” greeting that sounded again from the doorway, and said softly,

“What a rude protagonist.” [footnote]Lol, I was about to say that… not even a “thank you”[/footnote]

He don’t even know how to say thank you.

He had just spent half an hour painstakingly preparing it according to a special secret recipe.

Waiting for the other store employee, who had gone out to relieve himself, to return, Ling Huan changed out of his work uniform and back into his own clothes.

After much thought last night, he finally decided to go and see the situation firsthand.

Given Luo Sheng’s timid and weak character, it was likely he would need timely assistance and support.

009 has already used the face-swapping prop on him.

Now, no one would recognize him.

Lu Jinbei would have no way of knowing what clothes he was wearing when he left the house this morning.

……

Lu Jinbei stood on the platform, and although the lecture hall was packed with students, each of them had a screen tilted in front of them, obscuring most of their faces.

But he immediately spotted the youth who was secretly sitting in the back corner.

It seemed like it was his first time attending such a lecture. The youth looked around, only realizing belatedly that he needed to turn on his personal device. He then discovered that he needed to swipe his student ID to log into the school system. So, while the student next to him was turning his head to talk to someone in the back row, he quickly grabbed the other student’s ID card, swiped it, and returned it.

Lu Jinbei has excellent dynamic vision.

Even if the classroom spanned a great distance, he could clearly see the expressions on the faces of the students in the back row, and he could also see what was revealed on the youth’s wrist when his sleeve slipped down during his earlier exaggerated movements.

The youth’s face wasn’t one he recognized, but he wore the familiar black bracelet that he knew so well.

He was still wearing the same dark blue outfit he had on when he left home this morning.

The collar was clean and neat, just like Ling Huan’s usual habit, buttoned all the way up to the top button, exuding an indescribable sense of restraint.

A very faint, subtle scent of citrus seemed to waft upwards from the corners of the classroom, reaching him so lightly that it felt as if it had been scattered by the wind.

Ling Huan came to attend his lecture.

Lu Jinbei pursed his lips; the feeling of annoyance that had arisen because of the unexpectedly scheduled lecture inexplicably dissipated considerably.

He glanced at his light brain interface again.

He enabled the “randomly call on students during class” option, which he would never normally use.

“Why is attending a lecture so complicated?”

Ling Huan muttered softly, clumsily navigating the school interface of the First Military Academy, while furtively observing every move of the student next to him, then trying to replicate it on his own screen.

He finally managed to catch up with everyone’s pace about five minutes after the lecture began, albeit with some difficulty.

Ling Huan craned his neck and looked around, confirming Luo Sheng’s location.

Good students deserve to get the best seats: the front row.

He was a little far away, but when the mission started, he should be able to catch up since he run very fast.

Ling Huan glanced up again at Lu Jinbei, who was standing behind the podium looking quite presentable, and his gaze faltered for a moment.

The man was standing sideways at the blackboard, writing a few strong, forceful characters with an electronic pen. The bright yellow light shining down from above illuminated the nearly perfect lines of his profile. He wore his black military uniform impeccably, and the taut fabric of his raised arm outlined his muscular physique, giving him an air of cold, restrained, yet powerful and dangerous charisma.

Ling Huan averted his gaze, and suddenly, the memory of Lu Jinbei’s low, close breathing when he blocked his path in the corridor last time flashed through his mind.

His body stiffened against the wall, and he shook his head to try and clear away the jumbled images, when he suddenly noticed a classmate in the front row looking back at him enviously.

Ling Huan felt like his heart stopped when he was being stared at.

How was it that as soon as he got distracted and thought about Lu Jinbei, he was immediately being stare at?

The male student sitting next to Ling Huan adjusted his round glasses and sighed as he looked at the words “Unfortunately, you were not selected” displayed on his personal device. He then glanced at the seat number displayed on the large screen and, noticing that it was right after his own number, turned in surprise to look at Ling Huan’s device.

He quickly nudged Ling Huan’s arm, “It’s you! General Lu randomly selected a number, and you were chosen to answer the question! How lucky you are! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to speak with General Lu.”

Ling Huan swallowed hard, “Me? Answer the questions?”

He never imagined the situation would be a hundred times worse than he thought.

He was unlucky enough to be randomly selected in an advanced lecture class whose title he couldn’t even understand.

The student with round glasses looked at him with envy, “Previously, when General Lu came to give lectures at the military academy, he never asked questions. We never had a chance to talk to General Lu. When other officers came, they would always ask questions to some enthusiastic students, and if you answered well, you might even get their personal contact information, which would make it easier to get promoted later when you join the military!”

Ling Huan, completely unaware of his own potential, suddenly stood up and silently stared at the astronomical numbers displayed on his light brain interface, interspersed with a bunch of options containing English words.

Ling Huan stammered slightly, “Is it, is it option B?”

The male student next to him gasped in disbelief, staring at him, “What are you talking about? These aren’t multiple-choice questions; those are all calculation formulas below!”

Ling Huan closed his eyes in despair, and the man’s deep, magnetic voice reached his ears.

“This student.”

“Please stay behind after the lecture.”
