Chapter 1 Part 2:

He climbed into the narrow, cold bed, and thanks to the blessing of the shift change, he was able to take a short nap. Half an hour later, the bedside indicator light up, blinding red light, accompanied by deafening shrill ringing bell sound, Xu Jiu’s brain buzzing, hastily opened his eyes, hastily jumped off the bed, grabbed the work permit and ran outside.

The corridor was drenched in cold, freezing one to the bone. The place he was in now was currently one of the most important branch points of Mobius Labs. Over the years, the headquarters had spent huge amounts of manpower and material resources to build up a huge organization in the polar region, as well as the logistics facilities to go with it.

Xu Jiu was transferred here four years ago, and in the past four years, he had not only seen a lot of people driven mad by the cold and the closed environment, but he had also seen a lot of dead people. He knew in his heart that he would end up the same way sooner or later, it was just a matter of time.

He began to jog on hard and smooth pavement, while running, pinning his work badge to his chest as he did so. He ran faster and faster through the long weird corridors, the wind whistling in his ears, and nearing the transport point, before slowly stopping and joining the assembled group.

Supervisor stiffened his face, walked down the transport vehicle, holding the ID entry machine. The cleaners immediately queued up skillfully, one by one up, and grabbed the work card and swiped the card to report. Xu Jiu in the queue, went. forward step by step.

Not getting enough sleep at noon, the tedious process of punching the card inevitably makes people easily distracted, Xu Jiu drowsy, barely supporting his eyelids, lest the supervisor seize the handle, and eat another row of heads (criticize or reprimand). But just at this time, the warning light of the transport point gate suddenly lit up a striking orange-yellow light, at the same time, the loud beeping sound through the whole station, shaking people’s ears buzzing.

Everyone was greatly startled, not knowing what had suddenly changed. At the same time, cold electronic tones resounded up and down, the same undifferentiated broadcast across the entire station.

“This message is sent from the central control system: Alpha Team will immediately proceed to Area A to carry out cleaning activities, and Beta Team will stand by to assist Gamma Team and Zeta Team in their escort mission. Repeat again, this message is sent from the central control system …”

The supervisor and the others were frozen in place and had to stop where they were, waiting for the broadcast to end.

Xu Jiu had a number in his heart, this was an unusual personnel deployment mission, there must have been a very rare situation at the Antarctic site for so many armed forces to be deployed in one go, but what had gone wrong? He couldn’t figure it out, nor was he willing to explore it, curious people would get nowhere fast here.

Not long after, heavy and neat footsteps came from far and near, and the sound of guns and metal clashing was slight and broken, like a shower of ice and rain, wrapped in a murderous chill.

The air seemed even colder, and the people at the transport point held their breath unanimously, lowering their heads and occasionally raising a subtle glance to pass a cautious peeping gaze towards the other end of the corridor.

——Alpha Squad, a first-class heavy firepower unit belonging exclusively to the lab, specialising in matters of cleansing and suppression.

The black uniforms and hoods of this team were very intimidating. Their numbers were not large, but all of them were tall, with the physique of giants, able to assemble heavy Maxim machine guns and heavy bazookas with one hand, and withstand the powerful recoil of the weapons without moving a muscle. Whether in appearance or strength, they did not look like normal human beings, but more like some kind of unnatural product modified by biochemistry.

In front of such horrific humanoid tanks, no one dared to make a sound and attract unnecessary attention.

The air was almost frozen, and the tension was so intense that people were shivering. The supervisor changed his usual arrogant and domineering appearance, cowering like a quail, not daring to move.

Washing and cleaning, two kinds of duties, the difference between one word, but in front of Xu Jiu drew an insurmountable natural moat (usu. referring to the Chang Jiang River). The alloy floor trembled uneasily, and he hung his head down, guessing in his mind how heavy the weight of these killing machines was.

【What are these?】

In the middle of a dead silence, a member of the front row of Alpha Squad suddenly spoke up, pointing towards the converging hordes of cleaners.

He was using an encrypted language, and through his mask, outsiders could only hear a few low, gibbering syllables.

[Expendable items.] The man who leads replied, [Don’t ask boring questions.]

[Should be sent to the front.] The one who spoke earlier explained, [Consumable goods are always better when there are more of them.]]

The captain berated, [Mission first, this is not something you should be thinking about right now!

They only spoke a handful of words, so brief that it was baffling, but Xu Jiu could see clearly that the action of that finger just now had called for the supervisor, his whole body trembling greatly, living as if he had been pampered by high-voltage electricity fiercely.

Alpha squad quickly disappeared at the end of the corridor, long after they left, the people present were still in shock, especially the supervisor, his white and fat face, walking and talking unsteadily.

“Hurry… hurry up!” The supervisor pulled his voice, almost breaking it, “All get in the car, hurry!”

Xu Jiu felt that he is quite lucky. The cleaner’s private change of post is non-compliant, but if too many people are really too much, the leadership will turn a blind eye, all according to the mind’s disposal (intention). Because of the last equipment accident, he and Brother Wu has been in charge of the name, if there is no today’s hiccups, he had to nod his head and wag his tail to supervisor, singing and reading to do a set of performances, pretend to be grandchildren to grandma’s house then it would be okay.

The transport truck started.

In the car, Xu Jiu and the others had to change into heavy lead clothing, and when they were properly dressed, they had almost reached the place. Walking through the long corridor where the spray is poured, Xu Jiu skilfully put on the matching neckerchief, apron, hair cap, and then a layer of semi-transparent protective clothing, put on thick gloves.
