Because they were all hiding in the shadows.
Fluttering its translucent wings nonstop, Xixi urgently tried to recall information about Asura City, but on the surface, it still feigned composure.
[Host, please stop asking questions for now, okay? This place isn’t safe. For now, just find a concealed place to hide and don’t let any other taskers find you. I’ll explain the specifics once you’re safe.]
‘Mm.’
Obediently, she didn’t ask any more questions. Youyou rested for a moment before heading deeper into the alley. Her small figure was quite inconspicuous within the square-shaped Asura City, a place surrounded by a sea of blood. And yet, in the very instant that Youyou appeared, the taskers hiding at the edge of Asura City discovered in horror that the sea of blood, which had always been calm, had suddenly erupted into violent chaos.
Waves of blood surged, churning tens of meters into the air. The crimson seawater, thick with killing intent and the stench of blood, crashed down wave after wave, destroying the buildings and streets along the city’s edge. Some unlucky taskers had no time to react.
They screamed as they lost their lives.
The surviving taskers who witnessed this horrifying scene began to flee desperately toward the city center. They shot out from their hiding places, wielding sharp blades, their expressions frenzied. Like cornered beasts, their entire beings radiated a deadly killing intent and aggression.
And Bai Qu and Su Ling were no different.
The two fled the blood-water together. Even when they encountered other taskers, they merely shot them a wary glance and paid them no further mind. The crimson seawater was exceptionally potent and highly corrosive; the slightest contact meant an inescapable death. Thus, at this moment, with very few exceptions, the vast majority of taskers had no time to bother with fighting over the single spot for survival.
Half an hour later, Bai Qu and Su Ling burst into a tall building where they had stayed before.
Because Asura City had been open for quite some time, the initial chaotic massacre was long over. Now, less than one in ten of the original taskers remained—perhaps even fewer.
As a result, Asura City was now quite empty. For experienced taskers like them, finding a temporary place to live was not difficult.
Warily making their way to the top floor, Bai Qu and Su Ling let out a small sigh of relief when they saw that the traps they had set up before were still in place, with no signs of being tampered with. The color returned to their faces slightly.
After all, they were not murderous by nature. Although there had been times these past days when they’d been consumed by a killing frenzy, it was only because the situation had forced their hand. They didn’t want to die, so their only choice was to fight desperately to kill others instead.
Asura City. For the sake of survival, every tasker in this city had evolved into a true Asura who could kill without batting an eye.
Bai Qu walked briskly to the room where they used to stay, locked the door from the inside, and collapsed onto the sofa, closing his eyes to rest. His pale, thin lips were slightly chapped.
“Are you okay?”
Su Ling watched over him with a pained expression. He reached out, wanting to touch Bai Qu’s face, but the other man turned his head away to avoid it.
The light in his eyes dimmed for a moment. Su Ling tightened his grip on the dagger in his right hand and said in a low voice, “Don’t worry. I will get you out of here.”
Under normal circumstances, Asura City was well-disguised. It was a city filled with numerous treasures and great dangers, but for high-level taskers like them, the pros outweighed the cons. So, when he found himself in peril and sent a distress signal to Bai Qu, he had no idea this place was the legendary Asura City.
By the time the conditions for Asura City’s activation were met and the rules informed him of the game and where he was, it was already too late.
His heart was filled with a mixture of regret and remorse, but he could only risk his life to protect Bai Qu. Su Ling’s handsome and resolute face was etched with self-blame; he wished he could just beat himself up.
At his words, Bai Qu remained silent, focusing only on recovering his strength.
The threat of death constantly loomed over him. Right now, Bai Qu missed Youyou terribly. As for Su Ling… Bai Qu truly didn’t know what to do with this troublemaker.
If he could, he would have beaten Su Ling half to death. But with danger lurking at every corner, he could only suppress his violent urges and force himself to be calm.
After a long while, Bai Qu slowly opened his eyes. He turned his head to meet Su Ling’s gaze, his exceptionally handsome face a mask of tranquility.
“The sea of blood suddenly grew agitated and submerged the edges of Asura City. Doesn’t this mean the area of activity for taskers will become smaller and smaller?”
Bai Qu asked his question calmly. He saw Su Ling’s pupils constrict, a clear sign that he understood the terrifying implications.
With a barely perceptible curl of his lips, Bai Qu looked down at his own well-defined, clean, and elegant hands and remarked wistfully, “It seems this city is about to get lively again, isn’t it?”
