On Friday, when Kagura reported to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department headquarters, he received a message memo from Sanae Suguru.
“Just a moment ago, there was a call from Prosecutor Kiriyama for you.”
Whenever he mentioned the name ‘Kiriyama’, Sanae’s face always twisted into a blatant look of distaste.
According to Sanae, Kiriyama Shungo was a power-mongering yakuza and a vampire.
Indeed, as a prosecutor in the Tokyo District Prosecutors Office’s Special Investigations Unit, Kiriyama wielded a heavy hand in bribery cases within the political and business sectors. He made high-profile politicians kneel, and it was said he didn’t care in the slightest if it led to any deaths. In that way, he indeed had something in common with both a yakuza and a vampire.
On top of that, he was a purebred, with his family reigning over Japan’s legal community since his grandfather’s generation.
Three months ago, Kiriyama had purged opposing factions within the Prosecutor’s Office, and now his faction members held key positions. This manoeuvre led to his appointment as head of the Special Investigations Unit at the age of 38. In the Prosecutor’s Office, the head of the Special Investigations Unit held the third-highest rank, right after the Chief Prosecutor and the Deputy Prosecutor.
…During Kiriyama’s purge of opposing factions, Kagura had been manipulated, and in retrospect, he realised he had been used as Kiriyama’s cover fire. Just recalling it made his insides boil.
After glancing at the message memo, Kagura sent an email to Kiriyama, stating he would meet him at the Kudan building in the early afternoon.
From the Metropolitan Police Headquarters, he took the subway, skirting around the Imperial Palace, until he arrived at the Tokyo District Prosecutor’s Kudan building, where the Special Investigations Unit was based.
As he gazed absently out the window of the usual meeting room Kiriyama used whenever he summoned him, Kiriyama entered, about twenty minutes late. Naturally, there was no word of apology for the delay.
With a sharply defined, deeply shadowed face, a suit that clung beautifully to his impressive physique, and a height almost equal to Zero’s, he cut an imposing figure.
The prosecutorial badge of ruthless authority seemed ominous on him.
Kagura turned his body, leaning against the window with his arms crossed.
“What do you want, calling me in after two months?”
His gaze and aura conveyed a clear warning. But Kiriyama, expressionless, approached and stood right in front of him, staring down at him with dark, intense eyes before licking his lips.
Kagura frowned deeply, feeling as if a chameleon’s tongue had just slathered across his face.
“It’s about time I marked my pet again.”
The vivid sensation of Kiriyama licking and sucking on his neck resurfaced.
“If you’re so determined to be involved with the Eastern Alliance, I could make you my pet.”
Leaving a bite mark on his neck had been ‘the pet’s mark’.
At that time, Kagura had been pressured by the upper ranks of the Metropolitan Police Department, who wanted to block any investigation into the Eastern Alliance. To conduct an independent investigation, he had to curry favour with Kiriyama, who had connections with the organisation. Kiriyama was close enough to meet privately with Toono Ryouji.
By gaining Kiriyama’s cooperation, they had managed to save children that the Eastern Alliance had attempted to smuggle in for human trafficking, dealing some damage to the organisation as well.
Shortly afterward, Toono fled abroad.
At the same time, Kiriyama’s manoeuvre had eradicated his opposing faction within the Prosecutor’s Office—who had been providing assistance to the Eastern Alliance.
Remembering all this renewed his irritation. Kagura glared at Kiriyama, his eyes narrowed.
“I’m not about to be used for your career advancement again.”
In the first place, Kiriyama had sold out the Eastern Alliance to the police, so he was likely no longer involved with Toono Ryouji. There was no reason to gain any benefit from currying favour with him now.
Kiriyama slowly raised his hands, placing them on the window beside Kagura.
His gaze crawled over Kagura’s face from close range. It felt like a chameleon’s tongue was now licking his entire face, and Kiriyama, observing Kagura’s blatant look of disgust, narrowed his eyes.
Kiriyama’s face moved closer.
As Kagura put a hand on Kiriyama’s broad shoulder to push him away, a whisper brushed his ear.
“Last night’s play was thrilling, wasn’t it?”
Kagura froze, staring directly into Kiriyama’s eyes right in front of him.
They were eyes as deep and unreadable as a nighttime swamp.
“From the VIP seats, the view of the spectators is quite clear.”
So Kiriyama had also been at that underground fighting arena last night.
―――He saw me with Zero.
Though Kiriyama probably only recognized Kagura himself and didn’t identify his companion, a wave of unease surged within him.
Kiriyama was aware of Kagura’s connection to Enwu.
It was unclear if he knew about the man named Zero, who had founded Enwu.
“How did you know it was me, even with the mask on?”
“Ah, so it was really you, then. I guessed from your build and the way you walked.”
It sounded like Kiriyama was fishing for confirmation, though Kagura suspected he might be deflecting.
Kiriyama arrogantly extended an invitation.
“Next time, I’ll let you watch with me.”
Kagura instinctively started to decline but held back and instead asked,
“From the VIP seats?”
“That’s right.”
“What rank is required for an invitation card to the VIP seats?”
“S-rank or higher.”
In other words, going with Kiriyama would give him access to the S-rank area.
“I won’t show you things you don’t need to see.”
Zero always had a way of trying to shield Kagura.
Partly, it was to protect a detective who was his ally, but also…it was because he cared about Kagura Jinya as an individual.
But if Kagura didn’t see certain things, the balance of power in their cooperation could shift.
Taking a breath, Kagura met Kiriyama’s gaze head-on.
“I’ll watch with you.”
As he said that, Kiriyama reached out, running his hand along Kagura’s neck. When he tried to loosen Kagura’s tie, Kagura grabbed his hand to stop him. Getting another hickey on his neck and having Zero notice it would be a real hassle.
“Leave my neck alone. No marks.”
“As long as I don’t leave a mark, right?”
Kiriyama’s gaze on Kagura’s lips made a shiver run down his spine.
He wanted to avoid anything that involved close contact with Kiriyama at all costs.
After relishing Kagura’s hostile expression, Kiriyama touched his left ear, inserting his pinky into Kagura’s ear canal.

*Translator’s Note: I really don’t know what Kiriyama wants. It’s a puzzle. But he sure is perverted. I hope I’ll find out once I finish reading the last volume. -K
