Regarding the Elusive Mental Dark Spot:
Madam Shirlefs: Honestly, have you forgotten who founded the Sentinel Spiritual Body Concealment Training? Hiding a mental black spot is child’s play for me. Sigh, like father, like son—I even have to help him cover up things while he pursues his wife.
A mental black spot consistently appeared in the same location within Modrin’s Sea of Consciousness. At first, it was small, and Madam Shirlefs would casually brush it away while giving him metal combing, not paying it much mind. But as Modrin grew older, Madam Shirlefs finally realized that this mental black spot was unusual.
Mental black spots typically arise from a Sentinel’s volatile emotions, such as anger, frustration, or depression. Yet Madam Shirlefs observed that her son spent his days at home, sipping milk tea, nibbling on pastries, and squinting happily while scrolling through forums or binge-watching dramas and anime, showing no signs of emotional distress. Despite this, the black spot persisted in the same location, growing larger over time.
Theoretically, mental black spots should appear randomly within the Sea of Consciousness. However, years of research have shown that the spots associated with specific emotions tend to cluster in roughly consistent areas. This meant Modrin was definitely harboring a secret—likely a particularly thorny little problem.
Madam Shirlefs decided to directly ask Modrin about his youthful secret. Modrin remained tight-lipped, responding with, “What? I have a mental black spot that keeps appearing in the same place?” and “Could it be a new kind of mental black spots, something of great research value? Will I be turned into a lab rat and experimented on?”
Madam Shirlefs: “……”
Madam Shirlefs: “I don’t know either. Perhaps my old eyes are playing tricks on me. Your mental barrier is too thick for anyone to penetrate. Why don’t I have Mischna help me identify it?”
Modrin: “……”
“Mom!” Modrin pleaded desperately, “No!”
Madam Shirlefs observed her son with knowing eyes.
The awkward teenage Modrin finally confessed the secret buried deep within his Sea of Consciousness: “I like Mischna.”
“But… he doesn’t like me back.”
The Untold Stories of Madam Shirlefs
When Erwin was eight years old, he attended his cousin’s wedding and snatched the bridal bouquet from Shirlefs. Shirlefs pouted and sniffled twice, then looked at Erwin, who was two years older but still shorter than her. Suddenly, she felt a sense of satisfaction. Planting her hands on her hips, she declared, “You’re so short, you definitely won’t be able to marry a wife! I’m giving you this bouquet, which means ‘getting married soon’. I hope you’ll have a chance to marry a bride in this lifetime!”
Erwin was deeply resentful, but children forget quickly. Within a few days, Shirlefs’ name had vanished from his memory.
When Erwin reconnected with Shirlefs at the age of eighteen, he had already developed the habit of keeping a diary. After their marriage, Mr. Erwin compiled and organized his diaries into a book titled 《The Untold Stories Between Me and Shirlefs》, which became a classic, must-have book for Madam Shirlefs’ devoted fans. Beyond recounting her heroic deeds—rescuing patients with Sea of Consciousness disorders and assisting Sentinels in stealth attacks—the book was filled with personal details: her favorite foods, her celebrity crushes at different ages, and other intimate glimpses into her life.
However, the commercially published version was heavily censored, with all content related to Erwin himself being completely removed. As a result, the public only knew Mr. Erwin as a man of extraordinary combat prowess, a perfect match for the legendary Madam Shirlefs. The truth, however, was far more complicated, to say the least.
On one occasion, Mischna visited Modrin’s house to play. Modrin secretly retrieved his father’s original manuscript and showed it to Mischna.
Erwin’s diary had a very serious exterior—a plain black leather-bound notebook. But when Mischna opened the first page, it was bursting with girlish sentimentality. Mischna couldn’t believe that General Erwin, the invincible warrior who had single-handedly taken down a pirate stronghold, possessed such a tender, pink-hued maiden heart.
The diary’s title page featured a large heart, inside which the names ‘Erwin’ and ‘Madam Shirlefs’ were written in a cliché manner right in the middle of the page. A single dried rose petal was glued to the heart’s pointed tip.
Modrin explained, “They say this rose petal fell from the first bouquet my mom ever gave my dad. He asked the Research Center to preserve it perfectly.”
Mischna: “…”
The diary’s layout was remarkably simple… if you ignored the occasional hand-drawn chibi illustrations that popped up. The early entries seemed to be recollections, written in short, consecutive bursts.
Star Calendar 401, August:
Shirlefs is so beautiful, but her Spiritual Body… why is it so ugly?
Star Calendar 401, September:
Could it be that the uglier a Guide’s Spiritual Body is, the stronger their Mental Power? She hasn’t even graduated from Guide School yet, so how is she already on the national Guide Mental Power Ranking?
……
Mischna: “So, Mr. Erwin fell in love with Madam Shirlefs at first sight?”
Modrin squinted, recalling the story. “He claimed that my mom fell in love with him at first sight and bravely rescued him in a time of peril, leading to their happy marriage.”
Mischna and Modrin continued flipping through the pages. The middle section was filled with Erwin’s descriptions of how he strengthened himself and achieved military glory.
It wasn’t until March of Star Calendar 403 that Erwin dedicated an entire page to a large exclamation mark.
On the opposite page, he wrote:
The Bohr Pirates are definitely like rabbits—cunning and elusive, with three escape routes each. Their combat prowess is mediocre, but their ability to hide is infuriating. After seventeen days of relentless fighting, I was ambushed over seventy times. Unable to dodge or evade, I believed death was certain. Then, Shirlefs descended from the sky, using her Mental Power to help me conceal myself. Shifting from open assault to ambush, waiting for the rabbits to hit the stump, and I finally succeeded in my mission.
In the lower right corner was a drawing of a group of rabbits wearing pirate hats, sprawled in disarray after being beaten.
Mischna pointed to the page. “So, the legend of Mr. Erwin being a rare genius, both brave and resourceful—ambushing for seventeen days to single-handedly annihilate the Bohr Pirates’ Sentinel prodigy—is actually just a cover-up? Without Madam Shirlefs’ help, he might have died on the battlefield? The real question is, how did Madam Shirlefs happen to be on the battlefield in the first place?”
Modrin rubbed his nose. “I heard that my mom ran away from home at the time. She piloted a spaceship alone, got lost, and then ran into my dad, who was as clueless as a deer in headlights. He was being completely outmaneuvered by a group of pirates whose hiding skills were laughably obvious—that’s her exact words. She wanted to show this ‘Sentinel supremacist’, who always looked down on her Mental Power, just how good her concealment skills were—again, her exact words.”
Mischna was speechless.
Erwin continued writing:
Shirlefs is truly remarkable. I heard she got lost, so I gentlemanly escorted her home.
Modrin explained from the side, “After my mom helped him defeat the pirates, she tried to leave, but my dad grabbed her by the hair. He didn’t pay attention to the force in his hand and accidentally pulled too hard, causing her to slam into the spaceship’s hull and knock herself unconscious.”
Mischna: “……”
Shirlefs successfully treated a patient suffering from a Mental Storm in their Sea of Consciousness.
Shirlefs scored perfect marks in every category!!!
Shirlefs has been transferred to the National Sentinel-Guide Mental Power Research Center.
……
Star Calendar 405: Shirlefs accompanied the troops into battle, single-handedly supporting multiple Guides. The entire team remained concealed, successfully infiltrating the enemy’s camp, striking decisively, and avoiding all casualties on our side.
Erwin drew a bottle of vinegar, emphasizing the word ‘vinegar’ with bold, dark strokes.
Mischna pointed to the word ‘vinegar’ and asked, “Why would Mr. Erwin draw a bottle of vinegar in this context?”
Modrin replied, “I’m not entirely sure. Let’s flip ahead and see if there’s an explanation.”
The answer was immediately revealed on the next page:
Allen gave Shirlefs a flower today. Greene brought her a plate of pastries. Raguel appeared before Shirlefs twelve times…
Mischna counted the recorded names and realized almost the entire team was listed. He concluded, “So, Madam Shirlefs conquered everyone with her charm?”
Modrin nodded. “It seems so.”
Mischna flipped to the next page, his face instantly turning ashen. “…Mr. Erwin gave her a dish made with grasshopper meat?”
Modrin’s gaze darted around. “Well… uh… because he likes eating meat himself, and his Spiritual Body is a wolf, which also loves meat. So, you know… he just assumed… that human tastes aligned with their Spiritual Body’s preferences…”
Mischna was exasperated. “Who doesn’t love meat? But how many people can eat bugs without any psychological barrier?!”
Modrin whispered in rebuttal, “Actually, my mom did eat it. But later, when she found out it was made from grasshoppers, she felt deceived. So she forced her way into my dad’s Sea of Consciousness and attacked his mental world.”
Mischna: “Nicely done.”
Modrin continued, “Grasshopper meat is actually quite delicious, you know. My mom was just being stubborn. After that, we had it for every special occasion. And these weren’t just any grasshoppers caught in the garden—my dad specifically bred meat grasshoppers in a special farm. They drank flower nectar daily and jumped on custom-designed trampolines to ensure their flesh remained tender and succulent.”
Mischna: “……”
“My mom is too fierce. Even though my dad hadn’t opened his mental world to her at the time, she forced her way in anyway, and consequently, all his little secrets were exposed right before her eyes.”
The next few pages:
Why do I feel like Shirlefs has been watching me lately? Could she be developing feelings for me?
Ahhh! When she walked past my table to get food, she stared at my plate for three seconds! Did I pick something she likes to eat? Should I offer her some?!!!
She likes me, right? She likes me, she must like me!
Mischna: “So, the so-called ‘little secret’ is that Mr. Erwin likes Madam Shirlefs?”
Modrin rubbed Mischna’s spiritual body. “Maybe… probably… possibly.”
Mischna mourned silently for the poor Mr. Erwin.
Modrin gently pinched the neck of the small bird with its long, crimson tail feathers. His fingertip traced a circular path down to its abdomen, lifting its wing to reveal the slightly pale downy feathers beneath. Mischna watched as his own spiritual body flattened into a soft, round ball in Modrin’s hand, its wings spread wide as it emitted peaceful ‘chirp-chirp’ sounds.
Mr. Erwin was a Sentinel with a girlish heart, endlessly speculating over countless pages about whether Shirlefs liked him back, but too timid to confess his feelings.
Shirlefs waited a whole month for the fool to confess to her. During this time, she received countless gifts and love letters from other Sentinels. Meanwhile, after giving her the grasshopper meat, Erwin remained silent.
A month later, after Erwin passed his Sentinel mech repair certification exam, he emerged from the testing center to find Madam Sentinels, her patience exhausted, smashing a pot of roses into his arms. “Tell me, do you like me or not?”
Clutching the flowerpot and its blooms, Erwin blushed crimson, turning as red as a ripe tomato. “L-l-like.”
Mischna felt the awkwardness of having accidentally read an elder’s love letter. Noticing his hand freeze mid-page turn, Modrin urged him on. “Keep reading! I remember there’s a part about me later.”
Mischna, who originally wanted to say, “Never mind, let’s not read this,” silently changed his words to, “Does Mr. Erwin really allow others to read this?”
Modrin nodded firmly, his expression unchanged. “Of course. He’s been trying to show off this diary day and night. When he first heard it could be published, he was so excited he ran twenty laps around the house in the middle of the night. But later, the editor said that most of the plot—especially the ones where he acted like a lovesick fool and a coward—while perfectly highlighting Madam Shirlefs’ brilliance and courage, would shatter the public’s image of the military and undermine their trust. They had to be mercilessly cut. He spent the entire next day drinking wine in the cellar. That evening, when my mother couldn’t find him, she dragged General Erwin out of the wine pile by the ear and threw him into the bathroom.”
Mischna: “……”
Modrin brought up another example of Mr. Erwin’s eagerness to promote his romantic history: “You were too young then, so you definitely don’t remember how my dad dragged father-in-law around, forcing him to read this diary. You also wouldn’t remember how he pushed it on everyone, one person at a time, until all the Sentinels at the gathering grouped up and went to find their own Guides.”
“You’re talking like you remember it yourself. Don’t forget, you’re about the same age as me.” Mischna retorted, pretending not to notice Modrin’s casual use of ‘father-in-law’.
Modrin saw through the pretense but didn’t call him out. “I don’t remember it, but my mom always brings up this embarrassing story at every gathering.”
Mischna: “……” Madam Shirlefs really knew how to have fun.
Mischna calculated the number of pages, skipped ahead many pages, and tried to skip past Mr. Erwin’s descriptions of courting Madam Shirlefs, kissing, and managing their bonding heat. But when he flipped the page, he saw—Shirlefs likes to be on top.
Mischna: “……”
Mischna ‘swooshed’ and flipped forward two more pages. He could hardly believe it—Mr. Erwin had actually been eager to show this diary to others???!
Mischna consoled himself, Mr. Erwin must only be showing the part before he fell in love…
His face flushed crimson, Mischna flipped through the pages, only to find Mr. Erwin’s crude sketches of explicit content—some tried, some untried positions. After skipping three more pages, he finally landed on the third-to-last page, where Modrin’s image appeared—a photo of Modrin as a newborn.
Modrin gazed approvingly at the picture of his naked infant self. “As the saying goes, ‘A child’s character can be seen from their age at three[mfn]三歲看到老 (sān suì kàn dào lǎo): a child’s future can be seen from their age at three. From a Chinese proverb, 三歲看老 (sān suì kàn lǎo), child’s character can be seen from their age at three; you can tell what a person will be like at three years old. A Chinese proverb that suggests that by observing the behavior of a three-year-old child, one can make preliminary inferences about their future personality traits, emphasizing that an individual’s early behavioral habits have a lasting impact on lifelong development.[/mfn]’. Even as a baby, I was quite impressive, didn’t I, Little Misch? Don’t you feel lucky?”
Mischna followed Modrin’s gaze to the exposed lower body, his face burning with
embarrassment. But he knew the adage ‘when a rogue acts like a rogue, you can only be more rogue than a rogue’, so he still spoke in an appraising tone: “The normal length of a newborn’s genitals is between 1cm and 3cm. Your length is perfectly normal.”
Modrin: “…”
Modrin was furious. The consequence of his anger was that he insisted on grabbing Mischna’s hand and making him measure him right then and there. Mischna was unwilling, so Modrin had his big black snake bind Mischna’s upper body and tried to grab Mischna’s hand so that he could measure things himself.
Mischna was also furious. He commanded his Spiritual Body to jump onto the big black snake’s head. The palm-sized bird, with its beady black eyes, glared fiercely at the snake’s eyes, threatening to peck them if it helped its host any further.
The big black snake wasn’t afraid of its Host’s ‘snake-shaking’ antics, but it dreaded being ignored by the creature on its head. So, it reluctantly relaxed its grip, feigning compliance.
Mischna stared at Modrin with a blank expression.
Modrin’s hand, which was forcefully reaching toward his own pants, froze mid-air.
Mischna: “Pervert.”
Modrin huffed. “I can’t believe I missed your first heat symptoms. If I’d been there, our compatibility would have triggered your heat long ago, and we’d have bonded spiritually by now. I wouldn’t have had to wait all these years.”
At the mention of that incident, Mischna swallowed nervously and said cautiously. “When I first showed heat symptoms, the Sentinel Attraction Source… it might have been because of Seifer.”
“…” Modrin froze, stiff as a stone statue. “Didn’t you say you first showed heat symptoms when you were in the school infirmary?”
Mischna: “Yes… Seifer happened to be there too. He gave me the heat suppressant injection.”
Modrin roared in frustration, “Why does that damn cat get to be with you during your heat, and I haven’t even experienced it yet?!”
Mischna retorted, “Is that really ‘experiencing heat’?! Have you forgotten the Sentinel-Guide safety protocols? Can you honestly say that during your missions, there haven’t been Guides in your team drawn to Sentinels with compatibility rates over fifty percent, triggering heat symptoms?”
“How could your compatibility rate with him also exceed fifty percent?! Why would you have over fifty percent compatibility with him?!” Modrin squeezed Mischna’s hand, his voice laced with hurt, pinching from the base of his fingers to the tips, then back again. “I haven’t even seen what you look like during your heat. We’ve known each other for twenty years, and we’ve been together for three months…”
Mischna: “…”
Mischna’s face flushed crimson as he whispered, “Soon.”
Modrin’s big black snake began thumping the floor excitedly again.
Mischna’s gaze drifted away. “L-let’s keep reading. What else did it say?”
The last three pages, besides Modrin’s nude baby photo, also featured a drawing of Madam Shirlefs, looking slightly plump. Beneath the sketch, Erwin had written: Shirlefs gained weight giving birth to this little brat.
Mischna stared at the words ‘gained weight’ and inexplicably thought of the phrase: Shirlefs likes to be on top… He felt like Modrin was about to completely destroy his remaining shred of integrity.
On the second-to-last page, Erwin had drawn a scene of Shirlefs furiously beating Erwin with a pillow.
Beside the drawing was a short dialogue:
Shirlefs: You actually think I’m too heavy now?!
Erwin: No, no, I like it! It feels amazing!
Shirlefs: So you’re saying I felt bad before?!
Erwin: No, no, I love you either way!
Mischna thought to himself, Even Madam Shirlefs, who has a whole legion of devoted fans, couldn’t escape asking such pointless questions.
On the very last page, Erwin had drawn a large heart again. Inside the heart were stick figure portraits of himself and Shirlefs. As for Modrin, he was relegated to the bottom corner of the page, holding a small wooden sign that read: Star Calendar 426, Memoirs Created.
Star Calendar 426…?
Mischna felt something was off. “Didn’t you say that when we were kids, Mr. Erwin tried to show this diary to everyone? But this one was made in Star Calendar 426. By then, you were already old enough to be in Sentinel School.”
Modrin grabbed the diary. “How is that possible?” He stared at the last recorded date, dumbfounded. “It seems… that… it really… is the case…”
Just then, Erwin’s voice boomed from downstairs: “WHO TOUCHED MY MEMOIRS OF LOVE WITH SHIRLEFS?!!!”
Mischna and Modrin exchanged panicked glances.
“Didn’t you say this one was okay for others to read?”
“I think… I grabbed the wrong diary…”
Mischna: “……”
Modrin: “……”
Without another word, the two immediately sprang to their feet. Modrin hoisted Mischna onto his back. “Hold on tight! We need to sneak this diary back before Dad notices.”
Mischna clutched the diary, his legs wrapped around Modrin’s waist. “Right now, I’m incredibly envious of Guides whose Spiritual Bodies can learn the concealment techniques. If I’d mastered it, I could just send the big black snake to deliver it. Speaking of which, why is your Sentinel’s Spiritual Body the same type as Madam Shirlefs’? Shouldn’t it resemble your father, Mr. Erwin, who’s also a Sentinel?”
Modrin proudly declared, “There’s an old saying: ‘Like mother, like son’.”
Mischna, recalling the pile of insects Modrin had given him in their youth, replied with utmost sincerity, “No, apart from your Spiritual Body, you’re much more like your father.”
With agile movements, Modrin flipped out the window, avoiding the corner camera. Mischna strained his ears, hearing Mr. Erwin’s footsteps as he rushed downstairs to question the housekeeper. Modrin successfully navigated from the south side to the east side and was just about to enter Mr. Erwin’s bedroom when he suddenly froze, silently lowering his gaze to Madam Shirlefs, who stood half-hidden by a tree in the garden: “……”
The author has something to say:
I accidentally got carried away and wrote too much—the epilogue and extras have already exceeded the planned word count… There will be one more extra tomorrow or the day after.
Seifer has no actual scenes; all his ‘screen time’ exist solely within Mr. Spade’s 1,800-scene-long mental fantasies.
I have my own private setting for the heat cycle, which will be explained in the next extra. So, um, there might be some ‘soup’ to drink.
LMAO, ML’s parent sounds really interesting. I’d love reading more of their stories.
